Default Wheel width Question Please

I am going to upgrade from 17" to 18".

Any suggestions regarding a "sensible" width (Its a daily driver)

Does the car "tramline" if it gets too wide?

I was thinking 8" and 9" respectively..Thanks

Depends on what tire sizes you want to run. With 8.5 and 9.5, you'd run 245/40's and 275/40s respectively. If you choose to run 8 or 8.5 all the way around, you run 225/45 and 245/45 or 245/40 and 255/45. So again, wheel width depends on tire size. Both sizes must be decided jointly.

go with 8.5 front 9.5 rear
for tires, if your going with 19's front 245/35/19, rear 275/35/19

tires are sized roughly to the rim width. there will be a recommendation from the tire maker about the range of rim widths in relation to the tire tread width- too small and the tires will bulge and be unstable, too wide and the bead wont seal right, and might peel off under hard cornering. talk to a knowledgable tire dealer first.

8.5/9.5 with 245/275 are an extremely common size on this forum.

I can tell you I have them, I find they offer plenty of traction(with good tread you can only break traction with a hard launch, chirping gears is difficult unless the tires are cold)

no tracking that Ive noticed.

Thanks a lot.......What are the pros and cons regarding having the different widths front and back? as opposed to the same?

If "tracking" means wandering, drop the tire pressure in the back 2# and it won't do that anymore

good question, I dont think there are any pro's. they are supposed to be taller that I know. but wider... for drag racing it would make sense, but the difference should be much greater, no reason to have the drag of a 245 in front in a straight line.

and for turning, itll cause understeer due to the increased traction in back on an already understeer prone car.

you dont have to go wider in back, it does look cool tho.

Sorry. What will cause understeer? Having less width on the front?

I didn't quite follow you .......duuuh

Most guys seem to have 1/2 " difference between f and r.

Here in Aussie the "Touring" has the 1/2" diff in the 17's but the "track" has 18X8 all around.

Hence my confusion when considering 18's for my "touring"..
which has 17's now
