That's a weak spot in the rubber. My sister had one of those in a bicycle tire one time and it was a monster explosion when the thing let go. DO NOT DRIVE ON IT!!!!
If you don't have a gazillion miles on it, then check on warranty, if there was one. Judging by the looks of it, that's a manufacturing problem.

Did you happen to hit a parking block in the middle of the night while driving through an empty parking lot so you could go check on a couple of co-workers that hadn't left the parking lot yet?

I have had that happen to my wife's Nitto's and the tire shop says it's from hitting a pothole. They will generally measure the tread depth and prorate the new tire based on tread life of the tire but because our cars have camber the inside always wears first and leaves no tread depth. 
Just what I was told not sure if it is a legit circumstance but sounds reasonable.
