Bought new tires, Concerned about size. Help!
Hello,
I was in desperate need of new tires, so after doing a little reading I decided to go with the Hankook ventus v12. I have been using Falken FK452s in stock 03 touring sizes, 225/45/18 and 245/45/18.
I went to the local discount tire and started pricing the tires out, and asked the guy about running larger tires. He said that I could run 265/40/18 in the rear and keep the 225/45/18 in the front. I was a bit hesitant, but he assured me they would be ok.
I had the rears mounted, and waited for the fronts to be ordered. I inspected the tires and they definitely looked a little bigger. I drove the car home about 8 miles and when I got home further inspected, and they are quite bulgy.
Should I be concerned about the size and performance? I looked it up and they are outside of Hankook's specifications of 9.0" minimum. Any advice is appreciated.

It didn't freak out on the way home, so I am assuming it is alright. I asked the sales guy multiple times what he thought about it, and he said it would be fine. But I kept looking at it and it just doesn't seem right. Plus, I don't like that it's not within Hankooks recommended range. Because of that, think they would switch it out to the 245, or has the fact they have been driven on (8 miles) completely ruined the chance of that?

Thank you everyone for your input. I called first thing this morning and told them my concern and they are going to switch them out for me without issue.
I'm just going to go back to the stock size of 245/45/18.
If anyone is interested, I can take pics of what the 265's looked like on the stock touring wheels.

There is some useful information here you can use:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...#rimwidthrange
One particular quote I would bring up is:
"staying within the approved rim width range helps assure that the tire's internal stresses are within its design parameters."
Take the 265s back and get your OEM suggested sizes. Good luck.

pics of the 265/40/18 on stock 2003 touring wheels for anyone interested. The discount tire guy said he could cut a good deal on them if anyone is interested (because they are now "used")
I was able to exchange them to the 245s without any issue, and am much happier.
thanks everyone for your help

Vendor - Former Vendor
265's really designed for a 9" wheel min, oem 8's a bit tight. Could result in the tire crowning and wearing down the middle over time. Best to take back, as it was their recommendation, and exchange for alt size.
