Default newB Q: will 245/45 front and 235/55 rear cause VDC issue?

I already had one issue when Discount Tire put the wrong size tires on my car and tripped the VDC. Now I'm in dire need of new front tires, and Im getting a pretty good deal for them, i think (240 for 2 installed) at a local shop.

They will not, however, take back the tires if i drive off the shop with them, so I'm hoping someone here will chime in and help a complete novice with this configuration:

245-45/18 Front
235-55/18 Rear

I have a 03' 6MT.

I checked the online tire calculator app in the sticky post, and it seems to be okay, but some confirmation from a forum member would really boost my confidence.

You may be ok with the front tire as OEM specs are about 26" diameter.
The 245/45/18 will run around 26.7".
However,I believe there will be a problem with the rear.
OEM specs are about 26.5" diameter.
The 235/55/18 is gonna be about 28".
Way too tall.
I'd think you will have a problem with your VDC.
Actually, the tire you have selected for the front should be on the rear.
I'd suggest a 225/45/18 for the front.A 245/40/18 would also work on the front.

I currently have 245-45/18 in the rear.

This shop wants to move the rear tires to the front, and then put the 235s in the rear. I dont know why he cant just put the 235s in the front. If he could, that should work right?

Edit: no i checked the calculator, it wont work. Thank you so much for telling me this before I bought those tires. I called the shop, they are checking on what your recommended ones will cost.

The 245/45-18 goes on the back, then you need a 225/45-18 or 245/40-18 front.

if you can't figure out tire sizes - maybe you should consider driving something else. What idiot would put a smaller size tire on a rear wheel drive car? I've seen it done on front drivers for cars prepped for drag strip runs, but seriously, did you even look at your driver manual to see what the recommended tire sizes are?

sounds like the shop thinks your car is front wheel drive. i suggest telling them what size to put on and dont let them choose.

Difference in circumference is 5.6 percent. This will exceed the operating parameters of VDC. Back to the drawing board for you.

245 on the rear, 235/55 into the garbage. 245/40 or 225/45 front with the 245/45 rear

I asked the shop to see if they can order the sizes posted here for the fronts. I'll find out monday, hopefully their price will still be around the quoted price for the 235.

Admittedly, I dont know anything about cars short of driving them. But I've learned a lot from this forum. So thank you all for chiming in, I really appreciate it (and really glad that I came home to ask here, before getting those tires put on)

Taken directly from the Top 100 FAQ....

Q: The "Slip" light come on randomly, especially in turns, even though my tires aren't slipping. What's up with that?
A: Both the Traction Control System (TCS) and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) can cause the "slip" light to come on. There are a couple of things that can make it come on even though you don't feel/hear your tires slipping.

The most common cause for this behavior is replacement of the OEM tires with a different size. All Zs come with staggered tires, that is to say the fronts are a little shorter than the rears. This causes the tires to rotate at different rates which TCS and VDC depends on for normal operation. If you install tire combinations that don't maintain that stagger, it can cause problems for TCS/VDC resulting in the "slip" light illuminating.

The stock tire sizes and Outside Diameters are:
225/50/17 25.9"
235/50/17 26.3" (0.4" stagger)

225/45/18 25.9"
245/45/18 26.7" (0.8" stagger)

245/40/18 25.7"
265/35/19 26.3" (0.6" stagger)

265/40/18 26.3"
285/35/19 26.9" (0.6" stagger)

When choosing new tires, try to find front/rear pairs that maintain the stagger of at least ½" and less than 1". You should also look for front/rear setups that maintain the same OD as that will keep your speedometer and odometer accurate.

Here are the most common "upsized" tire combinations. These are known to work and keep TCS/VDC happy.

245/40/18 25.7"
275/40/18 26.6" (0.9" stagger)

245/35/19 25.8"
275/35/19 26.6" (0.8" stagger)

255/35/19 26"
285/35/19 26.9" (0.9" stagger)

245/30/20 25.8"
275/30/20 26.5" (0.7" stagger)

Check the manufacturer's website to find the Outside Diameter of tires before you buy them, or use one of the online tire calculators:
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
http://www.wheelsmaster.com/rt_specs.jsp

A less common cause for the "slip" light to illuminate comes from replacing the fronts or rears only. If you replace only the fronts or rears, the stagger may not be what you think it is because the other worn pair is actually up to ½" smaller than they were when new.

New tires also come with a release agent on the surface of the rubber that must be worn off. That makes them slick and can result in your tires actually slipping, hence the "slip" light.

NOTE: The slip light does and will come on during "normal" driving that is unrelated to tire size or wear. If you apply too much throttle when launching or going around a turn, the wheels will slip and cause the light to illuminate. Also, driving on slick road surfaces (water, oil, rocks) can also cause your tires to slip.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
