buying my first 350z ! need advice fellas :)
Hi there !
I am obviously new here and i will prolly bother with my noob questions so lets get started :
I am looking to drive it daily, very short distances like 20-30km max, would this cause any damage engine wise or is it a good daily driver for even such short distances ? I also plan to drive it in winter, cold winters where i live, but car will be in garage most of the times before i take off.
Is the maintenece cost for 350zs okay or should i prepare some serious cash for that aswell ?
I have some choices right, iam looking at some nice 2004-2005 models after only 1 owner ( have some offers localy where i live ) these have following mileages:
from around 60k to 130k KM.
looks very clean and u could say that owners were taking care of those cars.
price tags : from 11k to 13k .
then i have seen one astonishing 2008 Z ! only 24k KM and very clean !
price-15k.
(prices in euro)
question tho : is it worth to go for the newer Z for the extra moneyz ? I can afford it,but then again,i want to keep my car investment as low as possible.
Is there any significant difference between these years ?
Again i am noob here, i know that i should read around first, but i kinda felt like asking these to get honest and straight responses
ty in advance for any reply whatsoever !
regards,
Mike

I own a 2004 Touring, it's been a great daily driver for the past 10 years.
I haven't had any mechanical problems at all with my z since I've owned it.
Maintenance costs are cheap.
I haven't driven the 2005-06 or 2007-08, they're are significant changes amongst those years, in 05-06 Nissan added the Rev-up engine which made 300hp and 260lb-ft, Nissan also changed the headlights, tail lights, front fascia, and the interior, in 07-08 Nissan added the HR engine which made 306hp and 268lb-ft.

Honestly do some more reading on the model years and the VQ35DE, Rev Up DE, and HR motors. If your planning on basic mods the HR (2007-2008) will be worth it in the long run since the engine is just a better design and has plenty of potency from the factory (bigger oil pump, better oil and cooling passageways, better internals). So if it is basic mods the 07-08 is a better buy but if your going to build the engine and get a turbo the DE will hold up just fine and put down some good numbers (400 whp easy with aftermarket internals and upgrades). Also from what I see in the states the price difference in an 07-08 to an 03-06 is usually about 5000-7000$ USD (meaning plenty of cash for mods if you so desire and less depreciation). I have an 03 and the car has plenty of potential to get me in trouble stock. If your going for an earlier model look for one with the brembo brakes if your a very spirited driver and like to do some track days. Good luck to you ( just don't get a very or an auto and you will be set)

Hey Mikusk,
From what I've learned and read about the 350Zs over the years, I would recommend going with the 2008 350Z. The main reason is the engine. The 2007-2008s came with the VQ35HR which puts out greater base power than all previous years and I really haven't heard about any "major" problems with them either. I have a 2006 with the VQ35DE Revup. It's a great daily driver but this particular year/engine is known for oil consumption issues. Although my car doesn't have the extreme consumption problem, I do have to add 1 to 2 qt of oil between changes which is tedious. The 2003 - 2005s don't have this issue and neither do the 2007 - 2008s.
In terms of maintenance it's roughly the same across all years. I myself have not had any major problems. I purchased with 16.5K miles and I've only had to take care of standard/simple things. Such as brakes, battery replacement, belts, tires, oil/filter changes. I've had one TPMS sensor go out and so far that's been my only electrical problem. I now have 64k miles on the car and it's still running perfectly. I had a tuneup done at 60k miles (more standard maintenance). New fluids, new coolant hoses, that sort of thing.
In the long run I think these cars are far more reliable than most German counterparts. Replacement parts really aren't that pricey for an import and there are many aftermarket choices usually available.
Do you know what the trim packages are between the different years you're looking at? That alone can determine a large difference in price and what you may or may not want. I went with the base package myself but only because I'm modifying my car and the base is just cheaper and more practical to start with. Another thing to note is that the leather seat covers for 350Zs tend to crack/fade very quickly if you don't condition them often. I have cloth since it's the base and they still look like new, but if they were leather, they would be showing serious signs of age by now.
