Default My winter project...DYNO on P19

For all the people that say stop taling about it, and just do it.

Well, the time has come for me to get going with this. Initially I was going to build a kit similar to the STS, but though that it's just too much IC piping and the turbo will suck water in when raining. I also though about building a Turbonetics style kit but that just seems like a huge PITA. So I am doing something in between, the turbo will be placed just behind the rear transmision support beam.

This way I don't have to mess around with all the IC piping the STS kits have, and don't have to mess around with heat shielding/wraping/A/C crap ect.. the Turbonetics kits are known for. With the Turbonetics kits, there is just too much piping under an already crammed engine bay.

So far I have bought the followring (everything is brand new):

Garret T3 60-1 turbo 70 A/R housing, 60 TRIM wheel, TURBINE SPECS:T3 .63 A/R housing, 76 TRIM stg 3wheel
Tial 38mm waste gate with flanges, .4bar spring to start with
UTEC
UTEC tuner and wideband
FMIC 28x9x3.5
Test pipes
Exhaust build kit 409 stainless 2.5"
Turbo flanges with gaskets
Fuel pump
400cc APS injectors with clips and harness (rated @ stock fuel pressure) 550cc @ 4bar
Weldon scavenge pump with all fittings/relay/hoses...ect.
Oil line kit with restrictor/fittings/drain..ect
Boost gauge

There is still some litle stuff that I need to get but this will get me going for now. Everything I listed above cost me about $2500, and I figure on another $200 or so. I know that I still need to upgrade my clutch but that's a spring project. My goal is 360whp as it is a stock block that I want to enjoy for a while. When tuning day comes, safe tune will be more important than max HP. Enjoy.

One with the pics:

The car: 2006 Base 350z, manual transmision and about 38,000 miles. Bought it in Phoenix, and drove it home to Canada. The car is in excelent mechanical condition and well cared for

Turbo location, there is plenty of room here. The turbo is high enough not to get hit on speedbumps. The turbo will suck air from under the hood via 3" pipe, there is no nee to worry about driving in the rain.

Turbo drain line. It is higher than the max oil level.

Office desk:

The goods:

Passenger side downpipe:

More downpipe:

Under the car, nothing hangs lower then the stock exhaust even though it may seem like it does:

The gun, if you want your tig welds to look good sharpen your tungton well.

That's all for today, I will continue tommorow. Hot pipes should all be done by the end of the day tommorow and I hope to start on the IC pipping.

Criticism welcome, especially if it is constructive.

EDIT for dyno results:

Well, I finaly hit the dyno today. Here are the results. It looks like I am only getting 3.8-4psi of boost. This is according to the Haltech log, so I will have to look into this. The w/g spring is 5.88psi, so clearly there is a discrepency. My boost gauge reads about 5psi, but they are not all that accurate anyway.

It looksl like I need to work on my timing. There is a 1 deg. difference between my lowest HP and my highest, and the graph is somewhat choppy. My A/F is about 10.8-11.2 through out the entire rpm range, so tha is fine.

I will also be getting a boost controller and bumping the boost to about 8psi. I am now happy with how things are working and feel comfortable upping the boost. Once tuned I will post more numbers.

It's not something I have seen in person but it's something that I have read while researching. It wasn't on a Z, but it was a remote mount turbo. The way I look at it is, when you are driving behind somebody when the road is wet (not raining) you still have to use your wipers. The water vapour is in the air, picked up by the wheels and lifted up. It is probably even worse under the car. Just my point of view.

ok, fair enough... STS has a protective shield and a blanket on the filter. Trust me I have driven my car on the hardest rain you can think of and was fine, I even did a burnout in a heavy rain just for the fun of it (rain was like 2 inches big..lol). As a matter of fact we just had our first snow in NY about a week ago and now it's been raining for the past 2-4 days here and there is flood every where coz of the rain and melting snow. My brother visited us from CA and he wanted to test drive my car, it was raining so he still insisted. Drove the car hard and we were sliding all over the place (went to an empty road) and not a single problem... If you dont put a shield and just let the filter hang in there then yes it may suck water, not the case with STS...

subscribed......good luck with the build... Honestly you have allready spent 2500$ and you can expect 500$ more give or take a little. so thats 3000$. you could have bought a full aps ST kit for 3999$ brand new. which if more than capable of making 360whp. Just seems like a a lot of work. but more power to you, im not knocking you. I LOVE DIY stuff, i am sooooo glad i installed my Powerlab kit by myself.

Yeah I looked at that "special offer". Keep in mind that I am in Canada so shipping would be at least $250+ customs fees, the UTEC was an addtional $750 offerd by the seller so there is $2000 already, not to mention the exhaust that is an extra few $$$ and the tuner that I also have with a wideband.

So I think I'm still saving $2500 overall, but even if it's $1000 that covers dyno time and a brand new clutch. IMO well worth it, and I absolutly love to do this kind of stuff. Winter up here is 6 months, what else is there to do..

Good luck dude. I wish I had the same skills and the ability to do this stuff myself and being in Canada with a crappy exchange rate right now sucks for purchasing a turbo kit or any major purchases from the states. An APS ST will cost $4800 after exchange (offer is expired too)...

good start on the DIY, I am in for results. Too many people are quick to dismiss innovation.

This is what I have, it's a Miller Maxstar 150 tig/stick welder:

http://www.weldingsuppliesfromioc.co...Pkg_2876_1.jpg

It was about $1300 a year ago so the prices might have come down a bit. It's a great litle tig/stick welder, and worth every penny. I used the stick to build the steel bench in my garage you see in the pics, the plate is 3/8" steeel and it welded it just fine. So there is plenty of power, 150 A to be exact.

Thanks for the support guys. Back to the garage..hope to have some good proress pics later.

A little off topic, but other than Noahzburnt and JT, have any of the other V-8 projects been completed?

SnyperZ is starting a similar project as well.

Its not the innovation we dismiss, its the people who usually just talk about doing things instead of actually doing them.
