Question Upshift: skipping gears - yeah or nay?

I've heard both sides of this issue and haven't seen any conclusive evidence to support that skipping gears (say 3rd-to-5th) is bad for the car.

Anyone have input on this? I don't see how skipping a gear (with the engine at a high speed) is bad. But I've heard many people say "oh no, you should never skip a gear. It's not designed for that."

So, say, you're in 3rd at 6000 RPM and then you shift into 5th in a poor attempt to save gas....no harm no foul? I say it's OK. But am I silently killing my transmission?

UM no it makes no sense what so ever for anyone to say that you would either. although if you were in 6000 in 3rd gear you shouldnt be worrying about gas :-p. as long as your not grinding your gears your fine.

There no harm of skipping a gear, but what is the point of doing it?

If you try to save gas, you shouldn't be at 6000 RPM to start with. Try shifting below 3000. With the torque on the Z, you can do it even lower.

If you want performance, you loose too much RPM by skipping a gear. Ever wonder why people make close ratio gear boxes for high performance cars?

1-3-5 here too.
Especially with a passager in the car b/c 1 to 2 can be rough for everyone's neck.

Whether your up or down shifting, as long as you don't over-rev or lug the engine, you won't do any harm.

I remember Corvette having that annoying "skip shift" from 1st to 4th gear few years ago. Does C5/C6 still have that feature?

Well if you want to speed up real fast to say 75mph to get on the freeway, you will end in high RPMs in third gear. Since you don't want to go any faster, what's the sense in putting it into 4th, and then to 5th right and 6th after that. Just pick the gear that will give you the desired engine speed without revving too high or using a high gear when going too slow... If that makes any sense.

i heard it puts unnecessary stress on the syncros or something to that extent with evidence behind it but double clutching supposedly would stop that from happeneing... that on a honda tho so i dunno.
