Mine went out when I tightened the gas cap so I'd guess you have to correct whatever set it off in the first place...I've heard you have to have the dealer reset it but mine went out so go figure.

you need to reset the computer and clear the memory...

and to do it on OBD-II, you need a diagonostics computer...

and even if your check engine light goes away after tightening the gas cap, it is still stored in the history of the computer..

go visit a dealer or a local repair shop and ask them to clear the memory.... it should be like 30~60 dollars for a job that takes 1 second.... but since we don't have the diagonostic computer, oh well.....

and if the light comes back on, ask them to see what is causing it... the computer should be able to tell you...

Maybe its just me, but if my service engine light was blazing on my brand new car, I would be in the dealership ASAP to figure out what was wrong. Going to a local garage to have them clear the memory doesn't do you any good. The light came on for a reason. It may be trivial, but until I knew what the reason was I would be very concerned. Fix the problem don't just ignore the warnings or you could be very sorry (small problems often grow into big ones over time).

Default Engine light Lottery

Take it in, could save long term damage.

This is not an issue if you are close to your dealer and you are under warranty. However a friend of mine paid his VW dealer $80 to run diagnostics only to find his gas cap was loose.

Also, some Auto Parts stores will check out the codes for free.

Take it to an autozone or something, they do ODB-II readings for free and will clear them....Is it the Check Engine light...or the dummy Service Car Soon (oil change, reminder, etc..) light?

its the service engine soon light and its on because I cut the governer off the accelerator pedal and went wide open throttle causing the accelerator and throttle body not to match which caused the computer to go into safe mode till you shut down the car. but now the light wont go off. I've already ahd my dealer turn it off once and have now fixed the problem by adding a governor back. They gave me a major hassle last time so I was hoping disconnecting the negative battery terminal would take care of it and wanted to see if anyone had tried it.

You could try disconnecting the battery. Or pulling the fuses that go to your computer( if you have one). It is good to get the light reset since you can throw another code and not know it.
