what does an exhaust leak sound like?
hey guys,
ive had my Z since December 31st 2004. Only mods are whats in the sig. 4,000 miles. I noticed a week or two ago some odd noise coming from under the car. it only happens when i give it some throttle. i can only hear it with the windows down andit sounds like a slight "swoosh" coming from under the car. now, maybe its supposed to be like that, but i never really noticed it when i first bought it. the noise goes away in the upper RPMs and in higher gears.
any suggestions? should i take it in the dealer and have them look?
if it is a bad exhaust, will warranty cover it if they find a defect due to road debris? damn roads here in Houston are killer and i might have hit something i didnt know about.
TIA,
Harv

ive never heard an exhaust leak sound like sssss ssssss in my life......usually it sounds something like you are running an open exhuast, loud as hell....so yea take it to the dealer, a exhuast leak is even easier to diagnose when its up on a lift....

Some exhaust leaks you can't hear at all. The way to check for leaks is to have a friend obstruct both tail pipes by pressing rags over the ends. Let the back pressure build for a few seconds. You shouldn't be able to completely block the exhaust. You then listen along the entire length of the exhaust system, get as close to it as you can. Use your ears to find leaks, smaller ones will sound like a hissing under these conditions. Use your hand to feel for leaks (don't touch the exhaust, just put your hand near the exhaust). If everything else is quite, you should be able to hear any leaks and then verify the leak with your hand, all with the car at idle using this method.

I think it all depends on where the leak is and how big it is.. If it is right at the end of the pipe then you might not be able to even here it.. if it is midway up but after the CATS you will probably hear more of a hissing noise at idle, if it is before the CATS then it could be really loud.. Easy way is to just do what the other guy before me said, put it up on a lift, and let the car idle and listen.. what is making you think you have a leak anyway?

If the leak is close to the engine, it will sound like a fast ticking... like someone is throwing gravel against the manifolds. That will change with RPM. Further down the line, it will sound less like ticking and more like hissing.
