Default N E 1 else think the stock stereo sucks?

Man, i had to drive 6 hours today, 4.5 hours on last wednesday visiting my parents and the stock stereo on the Track edition really sucks.

its too raspy. i had to turn down the treble and move it to the rear so i wouldnt get headaches from listenging to it!

i thought it was my CDs, but it does that too for the radio..

is it me? or does the speakers/headunit blow?

Even the Bose in the Touring blows!! That's the only dissappointment.

Yep, the stock stereo is really pretty awful. My beloved 88 camry had a better stock system... My finacee, who knows nothing about stereo thinks it sounds like crap, too.
One of the big problems, I think, is that you can't boost the mid-range... In order to boost the clarity of vocals, you have to boost trebel. When you do that, though, the sound gets very edgy... the trebel kinda "spits" at you, if you know what I mean. Very tiring to listen to....

I completely agree! Im wondering how best to correct w/ reasonably cost?

I wonder if a speaker swap would work? Maybe some Infinit's or should we start w/a head unit swap?

Im glad Im not the only one.
Cheers,
Ed

My standards must be really low, cuz I never noticed a problem. I mean, when I first start the car it gets that nice little tebley blip. Then as I lower the throttle I hear a wonderful bass rumble from behind me, then at high RPMS I hear a nice midrange rush in front of me through the intake. It sounds great to me, almost like 3D Audio...

Oh, wait, you must be talking about that thing just above the temperature controls. What does that do again?

Thank you, thank you, I'm here all week; try the veal.

Seriously, I do listen to the stereo, but not very loudly. The road, engine, and wind noise tend to make it difficult for me to really notice the quality (good or bad) of the stereo. It works fine for me, so I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

Default Stereo Sound

It would be acceptable for me if my left front speaker didn't crack on AM mode when listening to talk radio . It only does it on AM ? Crazy ! I told the dealer and will have it checked on first service visit . Any thoughts on why the speaker sounds blown on only AM ? Is it the receiver , perhaps , and not the left front speaker ? Thanks .

It is probably one of the worst I've had. I thought my GSR had a terrible stereo, but this one might be worse. No mids at all. I've had songs come on that I've heard a million times, and not recognized it right away. I have an '87 teg that has a better stereo. I think my project Maxima stereo is better and only one speaker is working right now I think I may do an upgrade in the spring- speakers, sub, amp.

I replaced the stock speakers and all is better. Left the factory tweets, still not as much separation as in my old 96 Max with bose. But those were the good old days when the Bose actually sounded like it was worth the $800. Now they just put crap in there because they know people will change it anyway. I am glad I did not get the bose and I was mostly happy with the stock speakers (even as muddy as they were) for a month and a half, but I got the "I can make it better" syndrome.

I've had my Z for less than a week now and I am already ordering parts for a whole new system. I have the Bose system and it is truly awful. I can't even tell that the tweeters are wroking, if I cover them up completely it makes no difference. And the bass coming for the 10" sub is so muddy that I have to turn the bass way down. I'm scrapping everything but the head unit. I'm going with JL Audio seperates and sub and a 4 channel amp that I haven't decided on yet.

Default VandyZ --

Which speakers did you put in? Did you add any crossovers? Did you upgrade the amp, too?
Was there a noticeable improvement?
Thanks,
Mika

Also, VandyZ, what was the approximate cost of your upgrade?

TIA,

It's in my sig. I put four Eclipse SE8262 6.5" speakers in place of the stock locations. The upgrade cost $160 for the speakers and $15 for some Dynomat for the rear. I got the stuff at HiFi Buys on Nolansville Rd here in Nashville.

Dont fool yourself, I have not seen a drop-in install for Our speakers (there are probably some out there). The factory locations are oversized and the mounting holes are squared off and not standard. The install took 4 hours (minor modifications needed) and was well worth it. Sounds great too.

No x-overs and I have my fader set to F+3 Bass +1 Treble +1

Very loud for stock amp.
