Default Checking engine oil

Does anyone have any tips/tricks to get an accurate read on the oil level. I have NEVER seen such a poor design. I cannot get a consistant oil level mark due to the "slide across the tray and pull past the dipstick notches" thing. If this is more suited to the Repairing section, please move. Thanks

I find that using light and moving the dipstick with my wrist (teetering forward and back, not left and right) gets me a sufficient read on my oil levels. You'll see the shiny/glossy part of the stick (wet) and the part that isn't shiny (dry). But yeah, it isn't the easiest read... and I check it on almost every drive.

Yeah, with all this talk about oil consumption on this board, I just want to be sure that I'm not low whenever I feel the spirited driving bug come on...

Is there some kind of aftermarket gauge that measures the amount? I keep losing oil because I think it's starting to thin. Maybe an oil change due soon will help.

HA ^ very funny. The first time I ever checked the oil in the car I was blown away at how poorly designed it was. Not what I'm used to from Nissan.

Does it actually register AT full for you guys? It seems to ALWAYS read half a quart low for me. I thought it was burning, so I added to it, but then it still read half a quart low, and that's where it is every time I check it.

Okay you guys made me go check my oil. As I have only had 4 oil changes in my 03 since I bought it new I was worried. Hahahahaa.... It only has 12,976 miles. I checked all the fluids and found the oil clean and just below the H. Shes still a little hot from the drive home. I did notice that my radiator res. was below the low mark so I added some fluid to that. Way odd but it is overly hot here now. Quit making me check things!
