Not to reopen a current problem with some owners but, my dealer just called me to tell me they are going to replace the transmission. I brought it in this morning to have the greasy windows fixed and foe them to check out the horrible grinding when shifting into 3rd gear....They informed me that Nissan wants to replace the whole trans and not just the syncro's. This thread is just to advise anyone with the same problems to get it checked out. BTW, my vin # is 2406 and I have 4600miles....

Damn, sorry to hear that, but kick-*** that Nissan doesn't f**k around with these tranny issues. I've had 5900+ trouble free miles on my 6MT.
Question... do you fully depress the clutch pedal EVERY time you shift without exception? Just wondering.

Yes I do....This is the 7th manual trans car that I have owned and it is not right. Even when I shift slowly, it would grind sometimes. If I would hold in the clutch for like 5 seconds, then shift it would be ok, but when trying to accelerate quickly either by upshifting or downshifting into 3rd, it would grind.....

I was told by the my dealer that Nissan is going to great lengths to ensure as few defects and problems as possible. So this doesn't surprise me.
The Z is pretty much their signature car and they want it to succeed. It is an integral part of Nissan's revival.

I picked up the car in the afternoon. They said they will call me in a couple of days when the new one comes in and then I can make an appointment to have it swapped. They also fixed the greasy window problem but could not find the problem with the drivers seat. I told them I will show them when I bring it back for the trans swap. Also, my passenger oh **** handle was loose, so they tightened it up....The only thing that was strange was that they put 17 miles on the car road testing it. The dealer said that was normal for a trans problem...Oh well......Nothing I can do about it.

I can only wonder if this is a transmission problem that is present in all early Z cars. Maybe some are presenting themselves early and some may present late - possibly after the warrenty expires???

Mine is in now to check out a 1st to 2nd gear grind. The synchros are mot working properly. I shift to second with the clutch flat on the floor and I can sometimes feel the gears spinning rattleing the shift **** until it finally slides in. Only problem is it is intermittent and I bet it doesnt happen when they test drive it.

They didn't tell me what was causing the streaks but I can ask when I go back. I read in another post that too much grease on the rollers from the factory was causing the problem and that one guy took his door panels off and cleaned them with wd-40 himself. I recommend just taking it to the dealer to get fixed..
