build date and transmission part #
Forgive me my stupid question, I am not an expert...
How can I find out the transmission part # and the build date?
I am about to buy a 2004 Z, but I would like to check somehow before what I am getting into. E.g. verify that it already has the new 008 tranny and so on...
Is there any way to verify that it is really a 2004 and not a 2003?
Thanks for any information

I am not sure how you can found out about the transmission maybe the VIN number can tell you, but as far as telling the 03 from the 04 there are a couple suttle hints, one is the dash board door that covers the navigation in the 03 you have to pull the door out and then push it down to close, in the 04 it is much simplier, there is no tinkering with it. but if you just type in the VIN number you should be able to get the correct info. hope this helps, ohyeah I think in the 04 there are seat belt extenders but not in the 03, also I think there might be a dc/cigarette lighter in the front and in the back. the 03 only have one in the back.

Enclosed is the breakout of the VIN number from a 2003. I forget where I found it but I had the jpeg on my computer.
The VIN on my 2005 is consistent with the enclosed picture with the exception of the Year, of course,
Not that it matters to your question but the plant codes are posted somewhere. I remember because mine was made in Owasgi (or something close to that)
Also, the build date of the car is on the driver's door sill
It shows month and year.
Example,My 2005 shows a build date date of March 2005 on the door sill

Ohh, so many replies... Thanks!
Somehow I didn't check back after the first 2 days and then missed all the helpful answers.
So almost two monthes later I see this ... Thanks also @Jason for offering to decode the VIN
Anyway I ended up not buying the 2004 model, and instead got a 2005
So I guess the trannies in the 2005s will be pretty recent anyway and nothing to worry about.
I watched that cool video from Jason about the Tilton flywheel and read about the shifting techniques... and thought to myself... okay any kind of rattle noises, clunks, and issues with smooth shifting from neutral into 1st and then 2nd are due to the sports car thing... and I won't worry about it although I don't even have any flywheel mod.
Well after 2 weeks of getting used to, I can shift smoothly now with almost no clunks....
so far so great
