That's part of the recall for tranny problems. Do a search and you'll find more about it. There's a ton of threads.

What gear are you going into 6th from? 6th doesn't like being shifted into after accelerating hard in a gear or when going from say 2nd to 6th. It is trying to tell you it doesn't like it and letting you know not to do it again. Now if we are talking about going from cruising at 50mph in 5th to 6th then there is a problem.

I have an '05 and not sure if it would be the '03/'04 tranny problem or not, but I have experienced that it takes a deliberate effort to get into 6th gear. Simply put, I have to really push the shifter to the right when going from 5th to get it into 6th. I can't speed shift into it like 3rd and 4th.

I agree it does take effort for the 6th, but becomes easier after the break in period. Also might be a safety thing to accidentally prevent going into 6th instead of 4th.

I've got an 05 too and no probs with that at all. I sometimes shift from 3rd to 6th too and it's cool with that as well.

My 03 z also grinds when shifting into 6th if I skip shift. It doesn't grind when I run through all the gears carefully, only when I go from 3rd or 4th to 6th. Is this part of the recall? My car will be out of warranty soon, do you think I should try to get it fixed or replaced?

My 05 Z makes a chain griding noise that is comming from the passenger side only when shifting into 3rd or 4 gear. Have you guys heard of this problem? Shifting into 6th gear has no problems for me.

My 5-to-6 doesn't grind but I do have to almost pause to get it into 6th most times when going around 50mph. I might take it in to have them look. Oh, I have an 03.

I dont have any grind, dont think I need a fix. I am going to change tranny oil just as a precaution.

Just an update. I took my z in to the dealer, and they decided to replace the tranny.

I just shift slower than normal into 6th gear. That takes away the grinding for me.

Mine did that for a very short period of time when it had just under 20,000 miles.
First, it did it between 2nd and 3rd then it went away.
Then, it did between 4th and 5th and then it went away.
The car has 31,400 miles now and it hasn't done it ever since.
Sometimes it does it, but thats because I'm a little too quick and catch myself shifting before fully pressing down the clutch.
A friend of mine has a 2003 G35 and he had his tranny replaced because it kept doing it between 5th and 6th.
I know there was a TSB on this because of an issue with the syncros being made of brass.
For those owners that have this problem, they would replace the entire tranny which contains improved syncros made of steel.

Yep, it's common so just get it checked out by the dealer.
