And you mentioned "pc view of life"? Be honest with yourself on this one. Would you really be this disrespecful in real life when debating with others? Or is it because you are in front of a keyboard that somehow you become more insulting and so "manly"? If this was in real life and you had the person right in front of you, I doubt you would be so disrespectful as in all your threads. I think it is you who is living in a keyboard world right now. You are lying to yourself if you would treat people this disrespectfully in real life. But on the chance that you do, then you are just admitting to being a real a$$hole in real life.

There is no point in buying a automatic sportscar! Well maybe if you were missing your left foot.

How about no longer having full use of my right arm from nerve damage? I think that justify's getting an auto, but either way auto or manual get what suits you, not the people around you.

Couldnt have said it any better...But the point of these debates is not getting what you want...Its which tranny makes the Z a better sportscar and what the 5at Mafia are denying is that the MT is the superior drivers car period....Accept that and these threads will die...Keep telling yourself that the AT is just as good as the MT in a sportscar and you are lying to yourselves...Make the choice of tranny that makes you happy but dont stick your head in the sand about the AT's obvious performance shortcomings vs the MT...

On a track while the AT is hunting for the right gear as you come up to a corner the guy in the MT has selected the perfect gear which in turn, depending on speed, can engine brake the car to the perfect speed for the turn and just hold the line an shoot out the corner at maximum acceleration...That goes for canyon carving or track driving...Thats one reason why serious drivers choose MT over the AT...One is suited for city and the masses and the other for the distinguished gentleman/lady driver that demands the utmost control of their vehicle and want maximum enjoyment of the sportscar....

I drove 30 miles (2 hours both ways) in traffic for 4 years with an auto. I've only driven my MT Z for 11 months and don't mind the traffic. I'm usually in 2nd gear or 3rd or neutral. With an auto I was less focused and nearly rear ended other cars.

Our world is full of automations. That's why we are overweight. But a stick still won't shed off any pounds off your *** either.

No, dude, your Freudian slip is showing. For folks like you, it's not about the tranny or the car, it's about the "man," i.e., "distinguished gentleman" and "serious driver". I agree that it's about the "driver," and I would argue that the only way for sure to know who the better driver is would be to race two identical Zs, be it 6MT or 5AT. My bottom line: a good driver in a 5AT can beat an average driver in a 6MT, and vice versa, certainly.

What would you have to say if a driver could race you on a road course in two bone stock Zs, one 6MT and one 5AT, beat you with you in the car of his choice, then trade cars and beat you again? I know what I'd say: I dunno which Z is better, but I sure know who the better driver is.

What a lot of folks like you can't seem to grasp is that by your definitions, it's possible to be a "serious" and "distinguished" driver, but also a crappy one. Taking your assertion as fact that the 6MT is the better iteration of a "true sports car," owning one doesn't come close to guaranteeing you're a great, or even a good, driver. I see bad manual sports car drivers driving manual sports cars all the time. But I suppose we're all to believe that Mario would be jealous of your skills?

You talk so much about getting the facts. I'm going to have to ask you where you got this particular fact. The BMW SMG is an automatic. Why, you ask? Because BMW says so. In just about every country, except the US, SMG stands for "Sequential M Gearbox" and they reference the M Series BMWs as it derivative. In the US they call it the "Sequential Manual Gearbox" because of marketing. It sort of confusing because the SMG does use the same gearbox as the regular manual gearbox. But, just because it uses the same parts doesn't make it a manual.

I included a link to BMWs own internal marketing manual that it gives to it's regional marketing departments. It is pretty good reading for anyone interested in the SMG transmission.

http://www.m3smg.com/files/smgmanual.pdf

Here is a direct quote from the manual regarding the SMG transmission:

Working closely with the companies Getrag and Sachs, BMW M has transferred its motor sports experience to solutions to everyday motoring and developed a new high-performance driveline system. ... As early as 1996, the BMW M Series has made a name for itself with the world's first all-automatic manual gearbox.
The marketing manual goes on to describe how the SMG is an automatic transmission that uses the parts of a manual gearbox and "automates" the whole process.

If BMW is going to call the SMG and its ilk an automatic transmission, I feel confident I can call it an automatic transmission, also. I think that BMW has a little more clout than you especially when it come to the SMG. So, please don't go saying that the SMG is a manual transmission when even BMW doesn't call it a manual transmission.

IMO the only real manual transmission is a standard transmission where the driver actually controls the clutch and the shifting. Everything else is an automatic or a semi-automatic at best.

Also, if you like the 6MT and dislike the 5AT in the Z, that's fine. But, could you please share your opinion and experiences without the name calling and personal attacks.

Are we talking the same transmission? I've never experienced any of the problems you describe on the Z's 5AT. In manual mode, I can be in any gear I want at any time with the added bonus that I won't stall. In manual mode, the transmission will not change gears until you enter the shift command, about to stall or come to a stop. In auto mode, while performance driving, the tranny will not hunt for gears and can hold the gear. It's a real-time learning transmission. I'm not going to claim superhuman driving skills but I'm not a bad MT driver. My experience is that after the tranny adapted to my driving style it usually chooses the right gear more often than I can do it manually. I'm not saying that a MT is inferior or better but, I personally get better performance driving the AT than when I'm driving the MT. For others, it might be different.

How many times is the moderator of this site going to let this lame-*** subject become a topic of discussion? "I don't know why anyone would waste time buying an A/T sports car, it's just sacrilege" Give me a damn break!
The next time some sports car purist douche bag wants to rehash this tired topic please consider two things:
1) We're all driving the SAME DAMN CAR!!!!
2) If you only paid about $30k for a NISSAN does it really qualify as a sports car?
That's pretty much the equivalent of buying the Deluxe McChicken Sandwich instead of that old plain McChicken one at McDonalds....
