Question Lsd

Has anyone driven or owned a base Z without the LSD and then driven a Z with it? Is there a big difference. I have the base model and it seems to be kinda hard to drift it on occassion due to no LSD. Do you think I could just get one out of a totalled Z in a junkyard or just buy a aftermarket one, thanks

Yes, if you step on it in a corner the Base Z will light up the inside wheel a lot more. This is because it is getting dis-weighted. The Enthusiast Model and up will move the car forward thus making your track times and handling better. It can also still burn rubber going around a turn but, it is moving the car forward at a faster rate because some of the traction is getting transferred to the outside wheel.

Enthusiast Model up have VLSD. I'm buying a Nismo LSD. They are are better and you can adjust the slip bias without taking them out and adding shims like other clutch type LSD's on the market. I think that will come in handy on track days.

One of our sponsors. Thank you Performance Nissan !!!

I have seen them as low as $846.

It's one of the first things I'm doing along with Hotchis sways and Koni Sports when I get back to work.

I have a couple of people that do a great job installing these for $350-400.

So, worst case = $1,000 + $400 = $1400. For Nismo LSD installed with stock gear set. If you want to go with 3.90's it another $500 or so. I like the gearing the way it is I think. I need a ride in a car with 3.90's however. I might pop for that since it is only a 10% reduction and won't screw up the highway mileage much. Top end will suffer but this isn't a top end car for me.
140-150mph would still be good for me.

Thanks for the reply, 1400 sounds a little steep, I think I may just get exhaust and CAI before, but I definately will prob. get one. Is getting one out of a junkyard totalled enthusiast Z out of the question? Cheaper?

Yeah, I bet you could get one for under $500. Then it would be the VLSD not the clutch type and set up would put you at $850. Really you can do the NISMO for around $1250 complete. I think you have a good idea. I just figure if I do it I want the stronger unit that get better traction and is adjustable. However, in my Firebird I stayed with the stock LSD and regeared it and I am quite happy. I really don't see that you can go wrong either way.

I'm just going to bite the bullet and when I can just do it all at once. I have done one thing at a time for years. I figure I got the car for cheaper than expected and I have about 7K to put into it once I secure a job and don't have to use the money for house payments etc...

Should be much better cause you can preload it as you like and it is stronger.

You also get instant LSD action opposed to a liquid that has to react to lock the rear up for you.

You might want to see if someone could set you up a air locker or lock-right for our Z's. That might be even better. I would love get into that sport. Nothing like hanging it out with control.

Interesting, I think the NISMO might be worth it.

The Z isn't a drift car if u are planning on drifting. But the Nismo LSD is a good choice if u TRACK your car. If u want just a street car with a LSD then go with Cusco or Kaaz.

Why isn't the Z a drift car? I am fully aware of the sport and the car. It works fine. Although the lighter cars are easier to drift, the Z is no slouch.

Well the heavy wieght is one of the biggest factors, but other than that...

-There is alot more aftermarket support for, lets say...the 240sx which means, easier to find what you need, and probably at a cheaper price

-you can make a completely drift ready, with tons of nice goodies...for the same price it costs for a bone stock 350z...maybe even 2-3 of them for the price of a Z

-Drifting = lots of crashing and broken parts...ALL THE TIME....again the cheaper costs of the car and parts wins

-you can do basically anything to a 240, ziptie your bumper on, weld something you shouldnt weld, and you wouldnt care at all...cuz you probably bought the car for 1500 dollars, i should know, i drive a 240 that doesnt have paint on the front end haha

-350z's are too new, not as much is known about them as is 240's which have been around for 16 years?
