i hear people talking about so and so is a good tuner. what makes a person a good tuner?

 

A good tuner charges $100/hour. Anyone who charges less is a mediocre tuner.

 

a good tuner does all the work for free
a mediocore tuner charges you 100 bucks an hour
a bad tuner charges you less than that
and some one you dont want to goto charges nothing but dont want to work for free

 

A good tuner is like a good anything.....knows his ins&outs and is honest. Someone who knows, understands, relates and appreciate that the owner loves the car as much as he loves his family, maybe even more.

 

what makes him a good tuner? does he know what parts to get? how to program the computer? know which parts work best with which parts? how does one become a good tuner?

 

Practice and mistakes. You just hope he doesn't make a mistake on your car. Lol !!! It's like anything new, sometimes you just have to work through the issues. Sometimes you have to go back to stock until you figure out what didn't work etc. With all the different possibilities out there it is a matter of adjustment still. The more stuff to tune the more time it takes and the more $$'s it will cost you.

If they are a good tuner they set a baseline so they can return to it if a problem arises. A backout plan if you will.

 

I think that I understand your question. You’re referring to “tuner” in a generic sense: a street legal go-fast car.

A good tuner has a plan (see New 350Z owners, read this before doing any modifications to your Z.). He knows where he is going, and how to get there. A good tuner doesn’t necessarily spend the most money, nor is he the smartest guy in town. It's more easy to spot a bad tuner than a good none. I bad tuner will post “I just added a pop charger and a 200 pound body kit, but my car doesn’t feel any faster. What’s my problem?”

 

Whom have the ability to make your engine pump out to its maximum horsepower "SAFELY".

 

A GOOD TUNER IS ALWAYS IN PROGRESS.

A good tuner is someone who knows what parts work well and which parts don't. A good tuner can pump out the extra 10hp using the same parts as someone else. They have done a bunch of testing and know what works etc, etc.
