I've got an 06 with about 500miles on it. When I am in neutral I can here a rattle noise. When I press the clutch in the noise goes away. Somebody from another forum told me that this is "normal".

Has anybody had Nissan actuall "fix" this problem?

I have that too. We pay 30k for a car that makes a damn throwout bearing noise, how pathetic.

Nah, it just adds character. If anyone ever asks about it tell them you have some kind of super secret Japanese advanced technology tranny. Which might actually be close to the truth.

As for the OP, my '04 6MT Touring makes no erratic soundings, 8200 miles so far.

I wouldnt really worry about the throw out bearing noise since all of our cars have it, its just designed that way I guess. Tell people you have a race clutch!!!

The service person called me this morning saying that the difficulty in shifting into 1st and from 1st to 2nd when cold is "normal". They replicated the low speed "clunk" when depressing the clutch pedal but did not say what they intended to do about it.
They took my car out a 2nd time and the tech heard noises that led them to suspect a faulty throwout bearing. They said they needed to remove my transmission and open it up to see where the problem lies.
That's fine but I wish I got a loaner car... a Z roadster would be nice so I could see what I'm missing in a convertible... or even a sentra. I'd take it snowboarding this weekend of course! haha
Hopefully you guys don't accept slight flaws and fight for some sort of remedy. Sure it's not a high end luxury car but it's a Japanese sports car. For 30k, it should at least feel like a 22k import!

Is there anybody who doesn't have this problem? If there is then I have a problem with my bearings souinding, hence Nissan WILL fix it. I'll make sure of that.

I'm new this forum and I've reading all the threads. I ordered an 06 MB Touring March 1st. You guys are making me worried!!! I'm going from a reliable, modern, well styled 02 Audi A4 1.8TQ (chipped)...to a 300hp beast! But I'm going to have problems? Great Forum site for the Z.

Honestly, they built the car with low cost parts. If they had a getrag transmission we wouldnt be having these damn problems. God bless the supra tt and skyline gtr transmissions, made of gold I tell ya.

Don't worry. I was reading about all the tire feathering problems of the earlier MY's before I made my purchase but it wasn't enough to keep me from my Z. The problems are more annoyances than anything. Once your car is all warmed up and you're carving some canyons or just blasting down the road, everything's all good!

FOR ANYONE WITH THE SHOP MANUAL...

Can you PM me so I can provide an email address where you can send the pages dealing with lubing the clutch pedal assembly and the shift fork assembly.

The noise that I have is definitely coming from the clutch engagement/disengagement process. I just can't determine at this point whether it's coming from inside the car or outside...maybe both. If I had to describe the noise I'm getting every time it would be kind of like a spring stretching/squishing or something binding during the pedal stroke. I can hear it inside and outside the car. Actually when I was in the parking garage today next to a wall, pressed in the clutch pedal and it sounded like I was breaking something or it was about to break. By the way, my car only has about 150miles on it. Brand new 06 Enthusiast coupe.

If anyone has been successful getting rid of this noise, speak up. I'd be interested in knowing EXACTLY what was done.

Other than this, I love this car!

Thank you.

i had problem w/ my 03. was just a spring adjustment. although no more than 4k miles later i had to replace rear end(if you ever hear kink in back end of car at low speed stop and go, get it looked at) camber problems over and over. dealer scratched rims replacing tires because of this problem. brakes would always freeze up will sitting for no more than a day(had whole front brembo's replaced) tranny not going into gear w/ out clutching several times, etc. but after seeing a lemon law lawyer(no$ outa my pocket) w/ in 24hrs. nissan sent a letter to purchase my car back. being a loyal z fan i now own a 2005 yellow. still tranny/gear problem. sry for long post, newbie to posting w/ alot of built up car problems.....still love it though

I'm pretty sure the sound is normal. My 02 WRX did it, as well as my 98 Prelude. Neither ever had any issues because of it. I'm pretty sure most manual transmissions do it, Nissan or otherwise.

If you don't think your car makes the sound, listen for it with the windows down while parked next to a wall or at a light alongside a highway divider. They'll bounce the sound back into the cabin better.

As for it being an issue of the car just being cold, I don't think it matters. I'm pretty sure it makes the sound regardless.

Oh, and my 1-2 shift seems to grind a bit 98% of the time. Always goes in, but almost always feels a bit 'scratchy', so much so in fact that when it shifts perfectly smooth, I actually notice it. Could be the syncros, not sure. Concerns me a bit considering there's only 1200 miles on the car. I'll give it another couple of thousand and see if it smooths itself out before I think about bringing it in.

SCION TC's have just as many problems and they are not impressive at all. Toyota has just done a good job with their marketing.

Now if you want to consider a cost-effective alternative to the 350z, I would point you in the direction of the CIVIC Si. For the money and power output and the slick stock features like LSD, 6 spd, etc. it's hard to compete.

Run over to clubrsx.com and check out all the problems those guys have with their trannys. I'm assuming the new si has a similar transmission to the Type-S.

I don't have any problems with my 06 yet but I only have about 500 miles on it. It feels like this 1200 mile break-in is going to take forever. I think I'm going to drive in the canyons for awhile.

Got my Z back yesterday. The dealer replaced my clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and flywheel.

They took my car out for lunch too because I've got mud on my passenger's side floormat and my shift light was moved up to 6600 rpm!

At any rate, the transmission is shifting way WAAAY smoother than it was when I took delivery of it. No clunkiness at all. FINALLY! So for all those out there that are having poor shifting, I'd say bring it in, complain that the throwout bearing is making noise and enjoy that Z transmission you paid good money for.

no more Shift_grinding!

Actually, the shift light being moved might have something to do with their resetting the ECU, disconnecting the battery, etc. ... I think that's the default as I have had to disconnect the battery to install a stereo and my shift light was back to 6,600...

But they still might have taken it to lunch
