Default Octane

I am look to buy a 2006 350Z and with two different answers from dealers. What is the recomended octane gas to use? One owner told me he uses regular (87) and no problems. I'm a cheap skate but don't want burned valves after 50,000 miles if 87 is not recomended.
thanks, Bud

Check your owners manual. What does it say?

They say that, but then when asked about it at the dealership, the finance manager said in a low tone that it doesn't matter what the octane level is as long as theengine doesn't knock, but then again do you want tot take that risk with your Z, i know I wouldn't...

Dealers, salesmen, and auto finance people don't usually know very much about technical aspects of the cars they sell. The manual is written by the engineers who built and designed the car.

87 Octane isn't recommended. Why? It will cause the engine to knock and the ECU will retard timing to compensate. You just paid for 20 or more horsepower you can't use with lower octane. The engine is designed to run on 91, so in effect you are risking damage(if a knock sensor fails), and may exceed engine parameters if you get into a hot, high load, low RPM range that may exceed the ability of the ECU to compensate.

Seriously man, put what the MANUAL states!

If your too cheap to add $2-$4 extra every fill up, then you have no business in a $30K sportscar!
