When I saw this thread and the responses, I had to show you this.
GM has been doing it for years. It's called an EDR. My Firebird has one so I don't want to wreck and kill someone doing a hundred or so. Because if a lawyer is smart he can ask for the data from the EDR.

Now, I don't think the Z has one.

The black box is one of our newest safety innovations. Almost all newer cars are built with a black box. You cannot find out what speed you were going just because you got a ticket. The intended purpose of the black box is to record your speed BEFORE impact. Usually meaning it records around 5 seconds of your vehicles speed and current conditions before your air bags deploy.
There must be a reason you got a ticket. I'm going to court in March because of my first speeding ticket that could possibly be a conviction on my record. I'm buying a lawyer. If I could print out what speed I was going , I would have no problem getting out of my ticket. But such is not the case.

becuase the officer said if u want to take this to court, ur car should hav a blackbox, then u can see all ur previous driving habits, so i figured i'd ask. my car doesnt hav the microwave, wtf... : (
Last week there was a big snow storm in my city and there was an 80 car pileup, 5 people died. The police made a statement that they will be using some of the cars that had blackboxes to help find out what happened.
You must not have been informed of this feature in some cars?

I have to defend this guy for a second the the #4 poster, there is nothing wrong with Ramen soup
Being in school for 4 years I have grown very fond of that 30 second, gourmet soups fix. hahahha..... Black Box...... That was a really odd question, even if it did have one in it im sure they would get you speeding at some point well over what you got pulled over for

It doesn't come with a blackbox but you can surely add one yourself:

Did you read the Ottawa Citizen article about how manufacturers are obligated to enfore buyers of the EDR (sp?) in Canada???
They did a survey of 4 GM and 3 Ford dealerships on found that only one person (Sales man) knew about them.... everyone else, thaught that their cars didnt have them.....
Cessna (Forsees criminal charges being layed (because of the EDR info) for that crash on the 417....)
Yeah, One sales manager said he didn't know anything about the system. LOL

This is ususally an acceptable excuse. But not when the law(Canada) says that the sales person must inform the customer that the car he is buying has a blackbox, then it is not an acceptable excuse.
It would be like there was a law that all police officers has to read you your rights when arresting you, but they didn't know about that policy.

There is a "black box" inside many new vehicles.
There is also some cases on the books where information from the boxes have been used to support a driving conviction or have one thrown out. However, since you have obviously been driving since you got the citation, you're outta luck. It only records so many seconds and then records over. Similar to the ones found in aircraft.
