Default Checking the Oil

I was wondering about the engine oil dipstick on the Z. Does it come out all the way. It is kind of wedged inbetween the engine and my cold air intake. It didnt seem to want to come out all the way and i was afraid that if i pulled it out all the way it wouldent go back in. Is it supposed to come out all the way and how do you get it back in.

Our dipstick sucks. To best get an acurate reading with it, pull it out, wipe it down and set it asside for about 15 min, let the oil in the engine and in the dipstick tube drain to the pan, then re-insert the stick and remove quickly for reading. I sometime have to use a flashlight to fish the damn thing back in...

Another method is to check oil level first thing in the morning before you start it up. That allows all the oil to drain and settle in the pan before you check for an accurate reading. While I agree that the dipstick on our VQ35DE's are a pain, it's necessary to snake it past all the ancillary systems on the car. My wife's VQ30DE in her Maxima has a straightforward dip stick, but a FWD car with a transverse engine has less stuff to get in the way.

David, I enjoy your posts a lot, man, just for your massive knowledge. I mean, few other people can shed this much light on something as mundane as checking the oil level!

Sorry I missed the Grand Prix this time. Look forward to meeting you at the next meet!

I put a little bit of hair around the hole so that the dipstick can find it's way back in.

Agree with the hairy post. Au natural is better.
