Default about engine blown up

just a thought, i've heard engine blown up problem in Rsx and celica forum due to miss-shifting, do u think our 350Z will have the same problem too? and does anyone know how does this happen? and what will happen if u shift to a lower gear in a wrong speed)?(like u shift to first gear when u are 100km)

Umm... Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that happens in every car. If you're quick back on the clutch you can usually save the car from blowing up.

I think there is a video on the net of an RSX Type-S shifting into 1st instead of 3rd and the needle on the tach goes to like 9500rpm and nothing major seemed to happen

Rev limiters mean nothing when you mis a shift. There were a slew of engine blow up's with the 1997-1998 boxsters. The first thing the dealers did was hook up the engine to their computer and if there was what they call a "stage two redline" then the engine was not replaced under warrenty. A stage one redline occurs when you floor it to redline, a stage two is on a downshift. Think about it. When you accellerate, and hit redline, the fuel cut off comes on and you can not go any faster. But on a downshift, the car is already going faster so fule cut off will not do anything.

I'm not saying it went to a position numbered 9500rpm, just saying that if the tach continued the needle would be at a 9500-10000rpm position, see for yourself:

RSX Type-S *Missing a Shift*

that needle looks like its past 10,000rpm to me.

WOW....that needle sure went way the heck up there....however, the kid was pretty quick in getting the clutch backed off. i sure hope the car wasnt anywhere near the break-in period! This is why I will never buy another usedcar, cuz one instance like that will score the piston or weaken a ring and cause problems latter.....

BTW...i looks like 9k + to me!, but the engine didnt sound too strained....Im sure there is a certain tolerance, like if he was going for 5th and hit 1st then he would have first ground a gear, spun out of control, then had to pick up the pieces.

Rev limiters only work under acceleration (prior to an upshift.) The system will not stop over-revving during a downshift, i.e. 5th to 2nd....limitation of the system.

I haven't heard about that in the RSXs yet. But spending as much time at the Toyota parts department as I have tendancies to do, I have heard lots of the guys talk about the Celica's problems. If I am under the correct impression, it all has to do with the rev-happy engines and the gearing. I personally think that a 4 doesn't need a 6spd. A high powered V6 will actually be able to justify having the sixth gear.

so that means if u don't miss shift, then there's no way u will get into trouble with that, right?

I believe the problem that I read on the Toyota forums with all the celica was actually the trannies. A TON of new owners in "spirited" driving situations were slamming the car into reverse instead of 5th gear......that is the way I understood it to be happening......sounded like a design flaw to me.

I didn't even think that would be possible...but who knows?

A bunch of the owners were p!ssed that it was so easy to do....the misshift I mean. I don't belive it dealt with actually over revving the engine, unless of course this is a recent addidtion to the problem with the tranny.

also agree with post above, a 4 cyl doesn't justify the 6-speed

just my $.02
