Should I wait until the rpms drop when the cluth is just at the friction point and then add gas, or should I rev to about 1100 and then let the clutch out? If the latter, how should I let the clutch out?

For coming to a stop, put it in neutral and release the clutch pedal. You don't want to wear out the release bearing.
Also, don't put it in first while the car is still moving, esp. at higher speeds. You don't want to wear out the synchros.
