Default Proposed idea to fix "SEARCH" threads

I dont know what topic this falls under but I beleive puting a search bar/button in the middle in a big window of the home page of this site will help people not only use it more but more accesible. it has come to me that most people that dont use it just dont know that it exists.

I think by puting a search bar that is vary noticable in the middle top of the websites home page will reduce the number of useless threads and help in future searches by elimenating dumb none informative threads. for example if you searched "front wheel bolt" you should get only 1 or 2 threads that answer your question not 8273498624 threads of flaming and hoping u hit that 1 or 2 post that help you.

just an idea. webmasters what do you think?

if people would just follow the rules, browse the site for the first few days and learn to use it instead of being lazy there would be no need for this. This is one of the most user friendly and easy to navigate forums on the web. If you can't find what your looking for on here your in the wrong place.

Then when we get that taken care of, maybe we could ask for a big red button that will automaticaly put this thread in the correct location

The search button here is in the same place as every other site...the top right corner of every page. What is hard about that?

We would still get lots of pointless threads being posted because even though people do search, the search option on this forum is horrible. It's happened to me many times that I search for something, and what I get has little to no relevance to my search topic.

seriously guys if you look at the HOME page there is no clear way of showing a search function/bar. its under forums witch is hidden and dosnt apear there if your in a different section. also the search button moves to a different bar in diferent forums. IDK i was just thinking of a permanent quick search window that is vary visible on the top all the time will solve it. ><

The software that drives this Forum is a generic product used by many other and different types of forums. It is a horizontal product capable of customization to fit various vertical market and specific forum implementations (such as my350z.com). An entity (wanting to create and maintain a forum) license the product, and use its customization features to create as close to an optimum environment for their forum as they possibly can.

The search function of this product is its weakest feature. The reason is simply because a search on a car forum has different requirements and structure for optimum performance and results than a search on something like a software programmer’s or government forum. When you look closely at the search features, you see how poor they are. It is impossible to do concatenations, intersections, and/or, and other common searches parameters.

We keep beating-up new users because they don’t search, but the new user is often frustrated by weak search features. They either get no results when drilling down or multiple pages that literally take hours to read.

What search the forum for 3 to 4 days for every topic , the search function sucks. Its seems to be hit or miss if you find anything you need.

it's not a matter of people not knowing that it exists.... people just don't want to go throught the trouble of using it......... anyone that's ever been on a forum knows that it's there... and anyone that's been on any car forum knows that he will get flamed if he doesn't use it..... although this site seems to be a bit worse than others...

yea, I guess we are in a dead end here. its just disapointing that everyday b4 I start work I spend one hour geting some coffee donuts / muffins and sit on my desk websurfing and everytime I look at this sites new post, there is always a thread on something simple that if you do search and look around for 10 min you should get an answer. but no there is the post then there is the 10 posts on it flaming and making fun of the OP.

Did you search for complaints about search before beginning another complaint about search thread?

The problem is the search function SUCKS. But I'm not one to just complain, I have offered to make a google-quality search for this site, and I've done a prototype for another 350z site (the tech site). The thread is here.

As for duplicates postings, this is a common problem in search, and there are many solutions.

Want a simple solution to the dick-in-a-box repost problem? Anytime someone posts a new message, get any URLs (links) they posted, and check all other postings for the same (or similar) links. If it finds any, show the user the other threads and say "I found these similar threads with the same link, are you sure you want to post your message? Don't post duplicate content!"

You can even find "similar" messages to any given message by doing a search on the "important" terms OR'd together and seeing what comes back. By important, I mean terms with a low doc frequency, -- common terms like "the", "and", "350z", wouldn't be counted since they're not useful for distinguishing content.

So, admins, the ball is in your court. Hit me up.
