GM started putting those boxes in their cars since around 1999 I believe...I would be surprised if by now everyone didn't have them. As far as I know Nissan has the Event Data Recorder built into the car so if they decided to push it and be *******s you are screwed.

I hate to disappoint or alarm you, but the cop is correct. Starting in 2005, your owners manual should include this section:

EVENT DATA RECORDERS

Your vehicle is equipped with a variety of computers
that monitor and control a number of
systems to optimize performance and help service
technicians with diagnosis and repair. Depending
on the equipment on your vehicle, some
of the computers monitor emission control systems,
braking systems, engine systems, transmission
systems, tire pressure systems and air
bag systems. Some data about vehicle operation
may be stored in the computers for use during
servicing. Other data may be stored if a crash
event occurs. For example, air bag readiness, air
bag performance, and seat belt use by the driver
or passenger may be recorded, depending on
vehicle equipment. These types of systems are
sometimes called Event Data Recorders.

Special equipment can be used to access the
electronic data that may be stored in the vehicle’s
computers (sounds are not recorded).
NISSAN and NISSAN dealers have equipment
to access some of this data; others may also
have this equipment. The data may be retrieved
during routine vehicle servicing or for special
research. It might also be accessed with the
consent of the vehicle owner or lessee, in response
to a request by law enforcement, or as
otherwise required or permitted by law.

Well ya know, it happens sometimes when an obvious lie is being told.

A lot of people are skeptical after reading the story. A flip like this at 20mph sounds a bit like fiction. And I imagine some are also skeptical of the OP's maturity, based on some of the comments in the original story. So I can see how so posters have shown no sympathy at all. And that's fine. What drives me nuts are comments like, "you should go get yourself a Elipse", or "you have no business driving a sportscar". These "I know better than you" comments like serve no purpose.

If you are going to show concern for the guy, then show concern. This is not the appropriate time for round-about way to make yourself sound smart.

His car is an 03 according to his signature.

Black boxes in our cars? That could record speeding? Sounds like big brother is moving in. Couldn't my Z take the 5th amendment? After all, we are practically married.

Typically they only record 15 ~ 10 seconds of data or something like that and retain it when involved in an accident.

Nissan only started making it public in 05. Rumors were that there are some form of recording even in the 03 and 04 models. There were a couple of threads about it a few years back when it first came to light.

Sorry for the loss, but am glad you two made it out ok. On the other hand, I thought the Z would be in a lot worse condition than it was. I guess these things are made a little better than you would think. After seeing the one torn in half in which the occupants survived, I can see why they have such a high front and side impact rating. In looking at the righted vehicle, it seems like the roof holds up pretty well too. I have always felt safe in mine. I did opt for the side and side curtin airbags though, as the Z's centerline seems to be the same height as a large SUV's bumper. Don't entirely belive the story; however, I'm just glad we aren't morning two more Z-related deaths...

I just have to laugh, 20mph.. In that case I would have flipped my 350Z about 400 times during autox.

All of you should flame him too for being an idiot.

Stop giving him sympathy when he's so obviously full of crap. Maybe he'll learn something if someone gives him **** for being an idiot?

"oh poor guy, you can get a new one with your insurance money" wow, that's one way to look at it.

You're just lucky you didn't hit another f**king car or wrap yourself around a tree or pole, then we'd be just reading about you in the news.

I'm glad you're OK... doesn't sound like you handle stress too well... perhaps that will improve with time.

The Z handles like it's on rails... so losing control on a turn going 20 miles an hour sounds highly unlikely for a car with such a stiff body and good suspension. If a car lost it on a turn at 20 miles an hour it would really be unsafe at any speed. Z got really good anti-roll props from many different reviews... it is a difficult car to roll (though obviously not impossible). Unless there was a large dip on the shoulder and you weren't paying attention and went off the edge... I guess under the right circumstance if you drove it around a bend 20 miles an hour on the edge of a pretty good drop maybe. Can't tell from the pics if the edge of the road was a sheer drop without a guard rail. Can't blame the cop for being skeptical though.

The thing is so smooth that going 80 miles an hour in my Z feels like going 40 miles an hour in the Honda Civic I bought for my mom a few years ago.

You have to be careful and look at your speedometer, appearances can be deceiving behind the wheel of a Z.

Hope you chill a bit, and perhaps drive a little less aggressively should you get a Z again.

I'm glad you or other people didn't die from the incident. Very lucky. Cars can be replaced... people, not so much.
