And since you can't read and for the lazy...
From GM:
No replacement from Holden is sought at this time by GM, much attributed to the strong Australian dollar in comparison to the US dollar. If the GTO were to live, it would have increased by thousands in cost; far above where GM sought to price it. Another rear-wheel drive performance car is planned for release by Pontiac, but nothing is solid at this point.

DETROIT — Despite earlier reports that it might have scrapped plans for a new family of rear-wheel-drive vehicles in North America, General Motors to the contrary has now expanded its Zeta architecture to include a variety of new products for Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and Pontiac, Inside Line has learned.
The first of the new Zeta models is the Pontiac G8 sedan, based on the Australian Holden Commodore SS-V and due in Pontiac showrooms in early 2008. It could be joined next spring by a new Buick Park Avenue sedan, based on the Holden Statesman and just introduced in China.
While those two rear-drive four-doors are only mildly revised versions of Australian products, the next wave of Zeta models for the States will boast unique sheet metal. They include the 2009 Chevrolet Camaro, which goes into production in late 2008 and should begin arriving at U.S. dealers in early '09. It will be followed in short order by the replacement for the Pontiac GTO, which is due in fall 2009 as a 2010 model and will continue to be built in Australia.

The article that I found stated also that the Camaro will be coming out but no plans for a GTO replacement. That was from GM.

the s2k never crossed my mind when I looking for a sports car. I figured if I was going to have 2 seats then I was going to have a C5 vette or Z.
I chose the latter FYI.

the GTO was discontinued because of new airbag restrictions that demanded a re-design of the dashboard...since GM wasnt making enough sales to make all that money worth, they stopped production for now. And that's why the GTO isnt out anymore.
The new 07 Z is fast and nice but I believe the new G37 will steal its thunder.

^^ just to add...
Pontiac claims states there are other reasons for the discontinuance of the GTO; more than just sales. “There are some changes in the federal regulatory standards. One is an airbag deployment standard that would require some very expensive re-engineering of the car,” says Jim Hopson, Pontiac spokesman. “Since the architecture of this car is being phased out around the world it’s not economically feasible to continue this car.”

I say go for the GTO. I used to own a Z, traded for the GTO and never looked back. The only downfall is that it doesn't look as nice. Besides that, I like everything about the GTO better from interior, comfort, ride quality, qualtiy in general, the power, the stereo, and it also handles decent too.
