Angry 350Z Vs G35C Handling ?

I have a friend that just ordered the G35 Coupe and he is insisting that the G35 out hadles the 350Z. I have searched the forum, but have not come up with anything on this subject. Road and track has a article that states the G35 600 Ft Slalom speed is faster than the Z. Could this be correct, or was the test just a fluke. I would like to hear your opinions. Is there anything out there that I can find to show him he is wrong.

I would think the Z would handle better due to a smaller wheelbase and tighter suspension.

Thanks for your help.

The Z has inferior tires, which mean a lot in these tests like skidpad and slalom. The G35C got Pilot Sports, while we were stuck with RE040s.

With equal tires, you'd see a different result, I suspect.

yep, lighter, shorter wheel base, youd expect the Z to win. it is also atleast equal in chassis strength.

but the G35 did post better numbers.

tires would seem to be the key, but you cant say that without being accused of making excuses.

thats why I got new tires on my car. now I know I can outhandle most cars including the G35 no problem.

it's the tires. tires mean sooo much on slalom/skidpad tests. dotn worry about it. get new tires and then just grin at yoru friend when he says he can out handle you.

I just remembered the MT 2003 COTY article, where they tested both cars at the same time. The Z had a .87 skidpad number, the G35C had a .87 skidpad number. On the slalom, the Z had a 66.4 mph pass, the G35C had a 66.1 mph pass.

Small differences, but in that particular test on that particular day, the Z won slightly.

I've driven both, and the Z FEELS tighter. *shrug*

The G35C is more stable because of the longer wheel base and wider track. It is also more stable at the limit. On the track the stock G35C 6 speed will outhandle a track 350Z, but barely.

A longer wheelbase helps in stability at the limit.

Both cars can be modified by putting on bigger and better rubber and rims.

Default friend is dreaming

I have driven both car extensively and the z is by far a lot more stable. The g35, has a softer feel and the steering is not as tuned in as the z. The suspension on the g35 is softer and thus more roll will occur around turns which thus requires the driver to readjust the steering position, while the z goes exactly where you point it.

My bmw originally had good tires but with the mich pilot tires it was a night/day difference. Pilots are by far the best tire you can buy 225/45/17 but for $180 and tire life of 20K you do pay a price for performance.

If you want an excellent bang for your buck buy kuhmo extas tires

$109 225/45/17 tirerack

handle almost as good as pilots and last 30-40K miles

conclusion
z is a sports car
g35 is a very sporty car

Z
wheelbase, 104.3
length 169.4
width 71.5

G35 coupe
wheelbase 112.2
length 182.2
width 71.5

just for those that were curious

Ive never heard of a longer wheelbase really being better for handling, ussually they use long wheel bases to get a smoother ride. but shorter wheel base and a shorter car, puts the weight closer to the center of a turn, making it easier for the car to change direction.
