Default gas tank always on empty!

My gas tank is virtually always on empty and seems to be broken. It's weird, when i fill up my tank and top it out it reads completely full then i'll use the car maybe 2 times and that damn needle finds it's way on empty. by the third time i use the car my little yelllow light is on.Is anyone else having this annoying issue with their gas tanks?

I guess i'm going to have to go and get it fixed, i was just wondering if this was a common issue that maybe nissan is helping us with like they did with the old tire feathering (not that they helped us much there). I have about 68k miles.

How many miles you getting to the tank?
I have had a tank go in 1 drive, but I put miles on it.

Sounds like a bad sending unit - unless you are under extended warranty you will be paying to have it replaced. At least you don't have to drop the tank to get to it - pretty easy DIY fix but no idea on the parts cost.

according to the tank, maybe 50 miles. i literally drive it after i fill up and go to work which is a ten minute drive, go home and maybe grab a bite and the little yellow light is on, so obviously unless i'm leaking, something is wrong with the tank.

It's kind of nerv racking. i went on a date this last saturday and i was so nervous that maybe i was wrong and i really was out of gas! We were dead center of downtown, can you imagine the embarrassment, "hey sweetie i ran out of gas, get out and help me push in front of all these people"

If you can't smell any gas, then it looks like a sensor.

If you were leaking gas at a rate like this, chances are you'd be able to smell it at idle. Try cranking the car up with the hood down, leave it idling for 5 minutes or so, then open the hood and take a big whiff.

The Fuel Level Sensor Unit, Filter and Pump are one complete assembly. The Sensor Unit is a float that is replaceable.

I recommend that you have Nissan do a diagnostics. You do not know if this is a Senor Unit problem, fuel gage or wiring problem.

Ethanol gas is notorious for killing sending units. If you can avoid it, just use real gas. Pure-gas.org has a list of stations that sell 100% gas.

It's a known and common problem. There are dual fuel senders, and in your case, one is going bad.

The fix is simply replacing the bad sender. It's fairly easy, but don't do it yourself unless you are comfortable opening the Z's fuel tank.

I am having the same issue recently.. The tank tops out at 3/4 fill.

I cant get it to fill more than 3/4 tank.

Any idea on cost for replacement sender unit (if that is the problem?)

I may have to try to fill my Z full because I've never put full gas for a long, long time. I want to see the result because I've had 0 problems with my decade old Z so far.
