Default Best RPM to shift at?

I'm new to Zs and am just wondering if I should take the Z to redline before I shift, or if there's a better shifting point when trying to go fast. I ask this because I know on some cars, it's actualy better if you short shift them since they won't make power near their redline. It feels like the power kinda drops off around the higher 5s, at least to me, but I've been driving a turbo car that made good power up to redline so I may just not be used to this car. I have my shift light set at 6.3k rpms so it will give me that half second to register it before I hit the 6.6k I just want to know if I should be shifting earlier.

Shift at 6k and call it a day if you want spirited driving. That way you won't bounce off the redline and look like a schmuck.

Shift at redline.

Whatever perceived engine power drop you feel, it will be offset by the mechanical advantage of the lower gearing.

Our engine makes power with rpm, not torque.

Track. Thanks for the info kolia, I just wanted to make sure I was shifting in the right place since I shift pretty much right before redline.

+1. By the time you shift at the revlimit, you'll be in the right RPM for power in the next gear.

Redline. Our cars make full power at 6500RPM, and redline at 6600 (or 7000 if you're a rev-up), anyways. You'll be in your power band when shifting into 2nd.

And here I thought all these years that redline was to indicate the top safe rpm for any particular car, not necessarily the best point to shift. I do agree that, for our cars, shifting at or just before redline gives the best results for power. It also gives the most profit for the gasoline company you use.

Go to the dragstrip and practice shifting at different points. Lets us know how it works out.
