i have both and i like both. first auto i've ever owned in a sports car and i was worried but it's fine. i'm gonna put the paddle shifters in it too. to be honest i think the auto with the 3.3 is much better with boost as the 6MT's first 2 gears are worthless with 600+ and i have little problem with traction on the longer gears.

I don't regret getting an AT due to long commute everyday but its a different feeling while driving a stick...

Bottom line... it really depends on the driver's needs.
But just to make a point - what do you guys think about the GTR in regards to this debate?

Personally I would never get a high performance car in automatic. Part of what makes the Z so fun to drive is shifting gears at different times and reving hard, and you get none of that with autos. Manuals are just way more fun to play around with when you are racing or on the track.

I use to be an auto basher during my teen and college years. Now I solely drive autos now lol. I find stick tedious.

Conclusion: manuals are for a little after prepubescent stage 16+ year olds.

The newer AT computers mappings in the 2005 35th and the 2006 and on Z's have rev matching and it is very good. As a Z owner back to my first 280Z in 1975 I feel right at home in the 35th anniversary with the autostic even when on Indiana's equivalent to the Tail of the Dragon (HWY 135 in Brown County).

Jst because it can rev match doesn't mean ****.
You still
a) cannot have shorter gears like a manual
b) cannot have shorter final drive ratio
c) lose more power versus manual (torque converter = more parasitic losses)

but anyway.. the automatic Z's do have a decent auto transmission, BUT still have a torque converter and one less gear.

GTR's transmission is a whole diff ball game. it is an Automated manual, with DUAL clutches.. no torque converters, and it has more gears.

lol... that's my point. i love the term 'automated manual'.
honestly, it really depends on the the driver's need and preference.
as far as performance-wise, as we all know (especially those of us who go track or autocross), it's 90% driver and 10% car. =)

you put a bad driver in a porsche, expect poor time results or, even worse, an accident.
put a good driver in a decent car, you can expect good results.

(Thread officially re-opened)...274 ft/lbs torque, versus 260 in the MT...I'm in l-o-v-e with my Z's AT. Of course, I'm 60, and understand the mindset of the younger ones. "Different strokes for different folks!"

Before 05 manual Transmission where having problems with cluchtes, throwout bearing, syncronizer and snagging 3rd gear. Thats why I got a 05 6sp MT nothing like shifting in the twisties yoiu just got more control of the car. There was a time that I didn't think a car was a Sports Car unless a manual, but after driving my buddies Z with 5MT its not bad in shift mode it sounds good and pulls strong. Not the same as the 6sp Mt which I think looks sharper also but in heavy traffic or when you are dead tired you have more options with the 5AT women still wave and honk at you. So sometimes I miss not having a 5AT I didn't know you lost money on a trade in on the automatic but I guess that would depend on if your 3rd gear is snagging.

My 2 cent the GTR would be awesomer (is that a word) with a 6 or 7 spd manual tranny if you didn't snacht the drive line out in launch pattern.

i shopped around and purchased from past experience. I went with an auto on my first car, then second car was a stick, 3rd was an auto. Now my z is a stick. Point is whatever you get your gonna love it....then hate it. Its human nature. Although i couldnt imagine myself driving and at Z even though they are dramatically less expensive.
