The RX-7 is a rotary engine, the Z is not. I'd have to say it's not necessary. In fact, I wouldn't recommend it.

So I think the overall consesus is, don't redline becuase you have to, redline becuase it's fun.

If you do it too much though, you might get desensitized and have to start modding...or go blind.

I'm going blind, but it has nothing to do with cars....

Yea...I figured that it only deals with the RX7 because it is a rotary car. But I thought that it "would" make sense also to redline the 350Z because carbon does build up in the car's engine, and that way it would blow out all of the carbon inside the engine.

Thanks for the advice.

you dont have to hit redline to get the carbon out. .. just drive the Z hard and fast on a norm. . and should be ok. .the RX7's engine will go past redline and just never blow up. .thats the love of a rotary. .least once or every other month. .throw in a good fuel injection cleaner and beat it up then. .that should to the trick. .also with 10% ethanol in gas these days..thats also cleaning it out on a daily basis. .

I had a '98 Prelude; didn't drive too crazy with it, hit Vtec every now and then. I then took it on a Skyline Dr. meet, mostly sitting in 2nd-3rd gear higher RPMs, in Vtec most of the drive through the turns. After that day, the car felt completely different: more responsive, quicker to get up to speed, and my gas mileage improved. So maybe I had just knocked off 105k of carbon build up

I bought my '07 in August, and right now I am sitting at 3600 miles. Haven't really been driving the car too much thanks to the winter, and when I have had a nice day, I take it easy b/c of all the salt and sand littering the road. Basically, I haven't driven the car hard at all, and before yesterday, had yet to hit redline It felt great, and can say I will be regularly (once a week) pushing the car to the line of red.

The thing is, I felt a power drop as I approached redline Like the car was high strung, willing to rev, and suddenly it "softened up" a bit, like it was saying "oh crap, he is going to hit redline, eeeaaasssyy there" and slightly closed the tap on me. Anyone else with an '07 or '08 experience this? I was thinking that maybe because I haven't driven the car hard at all, the ECU has been programmed for lower RPM operation or something.

That brings up the question: does the ECU adjust according to your driving habits? Will regularly driving like Grandma affect your car's performance because of the ECU?

I believe that the ecu's starts closing the throttle bodies at 7000 rpm to prevent people from damaging the motor, whihc is why it feels like it eases up. I havent really noticed that though. It feels like it pulls hard to me....

Default 350z Habits

Normal driving the gas gauge when the tank is full it reads about 320 miles

on the highway after higher gear/rpms it read 410.
