Default My freakin garage ate my Z

Okay so...it's Friday and im lookin towards the weekend. I get home, park in my garage, hit the switch to close it as I walk in my home...then shut the door to the garage. Then I hear a loud banging noise with some breaking glass sound mixed in. I'm thinkin WTF so I open the door and this is what I see:

And from outside:

So basically...the beam that the rollers are connected to snapped in half as the garage door was closing and got wedged between the door and the frame. The glass in one of the windows shattered and some of it fell on my Z, but thankfully its ok - no scratches or anything.

The worst part is that the Sears guy who is coming to fix it can't come till Monday. I don't wanna take any chances doing anything myself because my Z is inside and I don't wanna hurt it. So anyways, looks like no Z for me this weekend

I'd have the Sears guy look at the entire install there's a reason why this happened, maybe something like the tracks are miss aligned.

I can't tell from the pic but, another thing to make sure is in place is the safety wire through the springs. I had one of them snap before (when there was not safety cable) at full tension and it wasn't pretty. Luckily nobody was in the garage at the time.

Had a similar thing happen once. Didn't know too much about garage doors at the time, but I broke a spring, which broke the cable on one side, and warped the door a bit. The door was in such a bind, I couldn't even get the emergency release to work so that I could open the door manually.

Funny to call into work saying I'll be late because I can't get out of the garage

I've worked on them a bit more now, and think I could have probably gotten it out without breaking anything more that time, but at the time, I was afraid I might make it worse.

I had a spring snap just 3 weeks ago, right next to my Z! Luckily, it missed.

I believe that in such a situation (parked in your garage, not driving it, and the house eats it), your home owner's insurance would cover your Z, not your car insurance.

So yea, here's an update:

The guy couldn't come today....he's coming tomorrow morning. Yet another day without the Z goes by...

That 2x4 holding the garage door opener should be lagged into the main beams of the garage ceiling.Looks like it was screwed to the beams and one of the screws let go.Replace the 2x4 with a treated 2x6 piece of lumber.
