When my Z has been in the sun for awhile on a warm day, I've noticed that when I close my hatch, the hatch struts seem to make a popping sound. But when I try to watch the strut when closing, it doesn't do it, of course. I believe it has something to do with how fast I close the hatch.

Has anyone noticed this or is it just my Z?

with the right strut ball joint. Spray some lithium grease on the strut ball joints.

Same happened to me about 2 months ago. The left hatch strut was replaced and trouble fixed. Take it to the dealer.

 

It was happening on the right side of my car as well. What it turned out to be was the spring loaded rubber stop on the right side. These come off very easily and when compressing it with my hand I could feel and hear the pop. I played around with this piece, compressing it and releasing until it could do this smoothly and now the sound has not happened again. We have had some pretty hot weather here lately as well and the sound is gone.

So before you have your struts replaced and take the car to the dealer for possibly another scratch or scuff you may want to check this out.
