Default Emergency - Anyone ever bought a car and have it shipped cross country?

Since It looks like I will be waiting for 2 more months for the 350zr (roadster) sunset 6M touring that I ordered ( tennessee being next to last on the allocation list ( In YOUR FACE ALABAMA!! ) ) I went looking on the net for it via nissanusa.com. I found exactly what I ordered, but it is in california. They are going to sell it to me for MSRP and have it shipped to me. It turns out to be 300 cheaper than I would have paid here!!!!

But now what do I do?

How do I pay for this car without getting ripped off to the tune of 40Gs, and also what is a fair price to pay for shipment from california to tennessee? How long would it take to get here? Is it insured? I thought I would ask you guys first. Anyone ever done this before?

What up??

my friend has used a company in the past called horseless carriage. the nice thing about them is that the car is fully enclosed in one of their trucks so it won't get damaged and be exposed to the elements. i'm pretty sure he paid a couple hundred but his wasn't that far. i do see they do nationwide shipping on the website though. call them up for a free quote.

I have continually shipped my car back and forth from Chicago to LA for school, and have paid $800 each time. It has been on the back of one of those 12 car carrier trucks so it has been exposed, but I cant imagine that if you went with a higher quality shipper it would be any more than 1500 or 2k. Just speculation on my part. I guess it all depends on how fast u want your Z

Not sure exactly what equipment you're looking for, but there's a Sunset Touring 6MT Roadster on the showroom floor at Pence Nissan in Richmond, VA. It's for sale at MSRP. If you call, ask for Michael Pence.

I had mine flatbedded in from VA to OH. Dealer paid for it, and I was paying $1k under sticker to boot.

Here's a thought....buy a one-way ticket for $400 or so, and drive it home! Just think you'd have all that time to get to know her, before introducing her to the family!!

I did this and let me tell you ... it sucked! First off, I got it from Smithtown Nissan and had it shipped from New York to San Diego. About the longest shipping you can think of. Took forever. Now that is not where the problems started. When I took receipt of the car, it had all kinds of crap embedded within the paint. I thought it would wash right off ... wrong ... ended up having to hassle with NNA and Smithtown to figure out how to deal with this. Both essentially gave me the finger in the long run and did nothing. NNA claimed it was the shipping company and the shrinkwrap it used to cover the vehicle for the trip. Smithtown said they would work with me to try and get it taken care of. I essentially had the car wetsanded at the local dealership here to the tune of $360. Smithtown said they would take care of this; never did. The dealership here also said the car needed to be completely repainted due to lesions in the paint. Seems some kind of chemical bonding took place within the shrinkwrap and the paint and made it look really freaking bad. Of course, I have no time nor money to completely repaint the car within three days of ownership, so that sucked.

Now on top of that, the registration process has been abyssmal. I STILL do not have license plates for the car, and I bought it in March, delivered in April. I already have 11,000 miles on the vehicle and still running around on a temporary tag in my window. Been to the DMV about 15 times so far (and we all know in CA what the wait is like, even with a freaking appointment), and no resolution. They even keep changing the requirements on me!

Ok, now that I am done bitching, here is my advice. Find out from your DMV what exactly you need to have to register a car from out of state. Do not have the car shipped. Plan for a roadtrip and pick the car up. Do NOT even get a plane ticket until all the financing and price details have been hammered out in writing. I know a lot of people have bought their cars from various dealerships out of state, and not all them were near as horrid as my experience. Just thought I would give a worst-case scenario.

Good luck!

It's hit or miss. They can sometimes add additional shipping charges and hold your car hostage until you pay up. Make sure you use a reputable shipper.

My family shipped a Merc from DC to San Fran and it cost around $1200.

It's a done deal. MSRP with shipping thrown in (which is 850)

The car is still pre-prep. It has all of the shipping protection still on it. All of the white plastic sheeting covering all of the body panels. It was never entered into the dealerships inventory. It has turned out to be actually cheaper than the car I ordered by 300 dollars. All I need is the VIN and paperwork from the dealer and I can pick up my tag ( SUNSETZ ) at the DMV. It has the burnt orange vented seats. Everything that was up in the air and indefinite about my ordered car is a big definite with the car I just bought. I got a 5.1% Nissan loan. The car is shipped out monday. 8 days in transit. My insurance is 85 dollars a month.

I Can't wait!!!!

You can relax, the danger has passed...

Sorry for the drama... I had to move quickly, I was afraid that the car would get sold. You have to understand that I have been combing the country for this car. They were freaked out that *I* knew that they had it. The screwed up thing about this car is that it came into smyrna georgia, just down the road from me, and was shipped to southern california where it was mechanically prepped, just to be shipped BACK across the country to me. They are going to unload it at my house, that will be a trip. The guy uphill from me has a boxter, downhill has a porsche, across the street has a corvette. I hope they get an eye full. hehe

The car is going to have 4,000 miles on it before I get my hands on it.

(of course they won't show up on the odometer)

Shipping is a great way to do it. I flew to tempe on August 23, 2002 and drove home to KC with the new Z. On the way home, my front end got smashed by a tire that ripped off an 18 wheeler in front of me, well, I guess it was a 17 wheeler by the time the tire hit my car. experience ruined to say the least!!

The second Z I bought, was from Littleton, CO. I had it shipped for around $500 or so if I remember right. everything went OK, except there were a few dings on the front bumber, make sure they put some protective stuff on the front so the bugs won't get it before you drive it!!!

enjoy!!!

I have used and highly recommend DAS auto shippers if you plan on shipping cross country. They specialize in classic/exotic/show cars with open and enclosed trailers in which you can opt for toploading your vehicle. Also, insurance is included for coverage up to $50,000 with a 0 deductible if you ship enclosed.
