Apparently they soon will by Crane Cams or maybe Comp Cams. They are so expensive now because that is what the mindless import loving drivers in this country are willing to pay. Anytime you have a question about anything having to do with economics just know that your answer will always be, Supply and Demand.

Installation is a huge event. Remember there are 4 cams not one like a V8. That makes them only $300.00 each. The good thing I've found with the Nismo cams is the tolerances are so right on that I've yet to see a car that the valve clearances were off. It get's expensive when you have to keep changing cam buckets(shims) to set it back up properly.

Let me ask you this, Jeff, since I can't get an answer otherwise--*if* I do the Tomei 268 cams, will any of the internals need to be changed as well? And does ANYONE know the full stats on those cams? I need lift and duration to make a final decision.

I'm sure you already know that there is thread running on this:

Z1 Performance is doing a profile on them right now. Sorry, I have the stock and Nismo spec's but no understanding.

Yeah, Jeff. I'm following that thread as well, but I'm impatient. Thanks anyway.

Here is a place that sells cams for Mustangs: Link

As you can see, the price is similar (you need two sets; one for each cylinder bank). No, all V8s don't use just one cam!

Competition will drive the cost down a little, but a precision machine part such as a cam is going to be expensive, especially when you need four!

I think that when the cams are about 600 dollars for the set that will be about right. That is when the market will be more mature and prices will have stabilized along with demand and supply. That's when I will get cams. My only dilemma now is whether to supercharge now and fully build the motor later when I blow it up or to bulletproof the motor now and supercharge it later when I get some more dough.

I can tell you this - you will never see cams for $600 a set, not even for regrinds....simple way too inexpensive to make it feasible. As I understand the NISMO cams are new billet units, not regrinds. This means they must make (or pay for) new blanks to be made, then do the R&D, etc and finally put it into production. Given that kind of investment, coupled with qhats sure to be avery limited audience (how many cams do you think NISMO will sell worldwide this year - I predict les than 1000 sets), its easy to see why $1200 per set is not really all that bad. As a refernce,t he cam I had made for my 280ZX was done from a new billet, as it had to be custom made to our specs - cost me a bit under $700.00..and thats for 1 cam!

350zspeedracer- do lots of homework - there is far more than lift and duration involved in selecting cams, and unfortunately, there is vey very limited info on either the NISMO, stock or Tomei's, as noone knows what type of scale they are using, how they are measuring the lift/duration, etc. At least thanks to jeff we can now start compiling an archive, as our company is looking into offer staged head upgrades, with cams an obvious part of the equation

Oh I know that the price will never come down to that. I just think that would be the right price to make a lot more sell. Why do you think they will sell so few sets? Nobody wants to pay so much for them. Almost every domestic motor that has anything done to it has cams. Cams on our motors will be such an ordeal an expense that many people won't even consider them.
