Usually glued on. When a customer with a Porsche wanted the absolute best detail, I removed the "carerra" logo with waxed dental floss, cleaned up that area and got all the wax out, and re-attached it.
That was the original dame for the Nissan Fairlady Z in 1970. (only in Japan) They were Datsun 240z in the US. Nissan thought that using the name Nissan would scare too many people away because it sounded too Japanese.

Legend has it that Mr K saw the movie/play (not sure which) "My Fair Lady" and was very impressed with the beauty of the production. Hoping to associate Datsun's new sports car with this beauty he managed to get it named "Fairlady".
Legend 2:
The selling of Datsuns in the US in the late '60s was difficult. There was a military association with a flag that had the letter Z on it. This flag inspired confidence in the ranks. Mr K used this flag as a rallying point in the sales staff, and "rebadged" the fairladys in the US as 240Zs (against Japans desires).
I wish I had the specifics of these two stories because they are pretty cool if you are in the heiratage of the Zs. Can anyone tell the story better?
