Default Is it worth modding an auto transmission 350z?

So this is something I have been wondering about, and I just wanted to see what you guys have to say about it. I have an 05 silver ZR with an auto transmission.

One of my friend's friends installed a twin turbo on his 350z and the transmission blew out on the first test run. I have another friend who installed an exhaust and intake on his G35 without any problems. Both owners drive autos.

While I think installing an exhaust and intake onto the engine should be fine, I am concerned with transmission issues. Correct me if I am wrong, but doesnt the weight of the car (especially the roadster) put some more strain onto the transmission? Sometimes I hear some grinding noises from the rear when I drive from a standstill and it scares me.

Does anyone have any trouble with installing superchargers or turbo kits on their auto 350Zs? Personally I am not looking for an insane hp gain, but I want to at least break 300hp.

oh and because I have a feeling this is going to come up......yes, I am 20 years old, I'm Chinese, and the 350z is my first car. I'm not a ricer who looks to race with old civics and camrys and wrap their cars around trees and poles on a regular basis. kthx.

Go check out the Forced Induction sub forum. I don't recommend asking this question over there, rumor has it they are a tough crowd. But they know their stuff. Look through their threads and see if that helps.

+1!

You should be alright with bolt-on's on the auto, but if you decide add some real power farther on down the line such as FI then I'd get the auto rebuilt, or at least a valve body upgrade. Good luck!

I have worked on two vortech'ed autos, both with valve bodies... wont say from who. both had can comm issues... mil on. and both drove in my opinion slower than a stock Z, nissan auto internals are trash. I dont even want to talk about CVT... rambling. ya so trade up for a 6-speed or if you are daring do a swap... besides who likes the sound of a good exhaust on an auto hearing the torque converter steal all of your power!!!

I drove several Zs with manual transmissions while looking. I had no problems shifting, even though it's been over ten years since I've owned a stick vehicle. My last was an '85 300ZX.

But the automatic in the Z is VERY good, and I knew the first time I drove one that it was the way to go.

As far as modding the car, NO. Spend the money on something useful and fun, like flying lessons. Automatic Zs are great for getting to and from the airport.

I wont deny autos are best in so-cal traffic... I would get a leg cramp... stock power into and auto they work great... nissan ECUs calculate estimated torque output and adjust line pressure according to maf, APP and RPM and when those #s are wrong... more torques for given load then you get less line pressure and slip. slip it once and it is a slippery slope down from there

I'm very interested in this thread. I'd love to see some numbers, though.

I have the same year Z and an auto tranny. I had no issues whatsoever, i have intake, plenum spacer, headers, HFC, exhaust and an Osiris tune. I also installed the 3.5FD from a manual and the Transgo VBU. You should have no issues with any of these mods since i had my car for over 2yrs now besides the auto tranny is very capable unless you want to go above 400whp but for that you need to rebuild.
