Question Heads Up Displays?

Having always been into jets Im well familiar with the H.U.D's (head up displays) used and know they've been on some cars for years, does anyone know of a way to get one on a Z? I found a company that was making a kit but its discontinued, was wondering if others are gonna try and put one in.

I have always been the same as you. You should hold off until youve seen one in action though. (Or have you?)

I heard about the vette having one and was dying to check it out.
When I finally saw it in action I was dissapointed.

you'll need to replace your windshield inorder to display it. the corvette has a special windshield that allows it to display the HU display. On the Z windshield (like many others) you have glass and safetyfilm. So thats 2 layers of reflection which will give you a ghost image if you use a HU display.

I use my dads car all the time(gran prix GTP) which has heads up. its neat... not worth adding tho. it gives you speed, radio station, volume, and a few other status icon stuff. nothing you cant look down 3" and see. not that Id be upset if it had come on the car; just wouldnt add it.

Nissan offered it in 89-90 on the Maxima and 89-91 on the 240SX back in the "electronic gadgetry" days and found owners did not care for it alot. It also adds complexity and expense so the dropped it after 3 model years.

Thanks for the info! I hav'nt seen one in action but personally I love havin the info right there so I dont have to take my eyes off the road for a moment, although the digi speed pod on the Z is very good I use that 100% of the time.

The thing I miss most about my GTP is it's HUD. I love that thing. When you get used to driving with it, it is a pain to go to a car that doesn't have it. The newer higher end GM stuff like the Vette also let you project selectable gauges and tach on the windshield as well, which would be really sweet.

I wish more of the industry would jump on this. I see this as a driver safety feature, in that your eyes never leave the road.

From what I've seen of the old Nissan solution it was crap compared to the GM stuff (especially the newer stuff). It had some little piece of reflective film on the glass that the thing projected on, and didn't have as much info on it.

Check a company named Microvision (MVIS). They furnish a lot of systems to Dept of Defense and have a new system available for autos.
