Default My rants on "wannabe"

So lately I noticed a lot who half *** their builds. My main ones are those that concerns their safety. More specifically, steering wheel, and harness.

It seems people don't understand that harness are design to be use with a FULL roll cage. NOT a roll bar. SERIOUS injury can and WILL occur in the event of a crash. I see these people installing all these harness with a harness bar, disregarding their safety just so they can say they have a harness.

Another thing that bother me is the aftermarket steering wheels with quick disconnect and no air bags. These wheels were design to be use ALONG side of harness. Yet again they skip the safety measures just to be "cool" and for the sakes of saying "I got it".

My rule on any project is, if you can't afford to do it right, don't do it at all.

That's my rant and opinion on the matter. Call me a safety freak or whatever, but I don't think people understand the reality and danger of these products when used incorrectly.

I hear ya and your points on harness bars and pulling an airbag equipped steering wheel are well-taken. But it's part of the "glitter" that many new Z owners want to sprinkle on their new rides. They don't realize that safety equipment installed incorrectly can result in catastrophic injuries in the event of an accident. If you're going to install safety equipment, the HOW and WHY it's done is as important as what components are used.

It's just what the culture is becoming these days. Kids want to get into hobby of modifying cars with a three figure budget so they rather buy ten cheap and shi*tty mods than one or two high quality mods.

More like "kids just want to mimics what they see in tv." not realizing it takes serious cash to properly and safely build a nice/fast car. I guess that's why auto zone is still in business...

I can't remember where I saw it but there's a picture on the internet of a car that crashed with a improperly installed harness. Ill put it this way there was blood all over the interior.

Yeah I know what you mean. People don't understand safety comes in a whole package (weld in cage, seat, steering wheel, harness).
On that autozone thing though, its all the damn ghetto people (I won't specify) in socal that stick everything they can on their cars.

Totally agree with you. On my current build it hasn't been nothing less than quality parts. To be honest, it seems these cars are pretty dirt cheap right now and so are the ebay parts and knock offs laying around.

I remember this guy here who is now driving in NASA events and got a cheap aftermarket steering wheel and knockoff parts. The same goes for his tires and Ebay wing. I asked the guy why he didn't get a Momo, Personal, or Nardi wheel. He tells me because it's too expensive. I can't stand that. Hell, I would've just left the steering wheel stock rather than have some chinese made piece of $hit break in half just like in this video.

Wow...That steering wheel vid is scary!!
There a lot of things I want to do to my Z but safety first. I like my car to perform excellent and look great. If I can't afford a real upgrade I wait until I have the $$$$. I don't really care what others think. Some aftermarket parts look cool but lack performance and most important safety!!
I live in Florida and on Hwy 75 I think the average speed is around 85 mph. I want my car to perform its best. Even though I have a stock steering wheel----I know it is going to work properly along with the rest of my car.

Unfortunately that's what happens with depreciation. You can pick up a Z for sub $10k nowadays.

One big thing has not been mentioned , a head and neck restraint. A harness is meant to be worn with a HANS device to keep your neck from breaking in an impact

The HANS Device and other head-and-neck restraints are a relatively new safety innovation. Certainly, basal skull fractures have been one of the most serious injuries in motorsports and the HANS Device addressed that. But I also raced without one for decades and (touch wood) never had such a shunt where one was needed. I have, however been upside down in a racing accident and can say that the rollcage and five-point safety harness did their jobs in keeping me from serious injury. When racing currently, I wear a HANS device each and every time out.

But this thread is about the wannabees who are improperly using racing belts and harness bars. They don't care about a HANS device and wouldn't think it was cool to roll up to a nightclub wearing one.

Gotta thin the herd out somehow right? If people want to kill themselves with faulty equipment that's not any of my business. When they put other's lives at risks that's when there is a problem. But that crash in Tampa though is gruesome. Glad no bystanders got hurt. And who would want to install that stuff on a street car anyways regardless if it's real or not. Looks tacky and out of place.
