1st Gear- stiff?
Sometimes it takes me a few attempts to get the gearbox into first gear (6-speed) from a stop...has anyone else had this problem? I've only got 400 miles on the odo, so I'm assuming that the car just needs to broken in a bit more?
Otherwise the gearbox feels like a million bucks....

Hey Ethan,
Did you take pictures of your car in front of the Hyatt in New Brunswick. I saw some pics online and told it might of been yours. I work their and I am still waiting for my CS base from Acme.
Just wondering

Yes, I would say one out of very ten tries I have trouble. I have not figured out what I am doing to cause it to happen. I think I may just be missing the gate. Let me know if you figure anything out.
You might be missing the gate. If you have trouble putting into 1st, try putting it into second then put it in to first. I have to do do this to my MR2 when I have trouble.

Good idea- I do that once in a while and it works- hope I won't have to in the long run though...

I found that sometimes, it's tough to get into first because I haven't depressed the clutch all the way. The last half inch or so of travel seems important. It also helps if the car is completely stopped. If you're still rolling, even very slowly, it grinds a little going into first.
Try letting the clutch out in neutral then pushing it in and shifting into first. Sometimes this happens to me in my aunts car it just has to deal with the shaft inside spinning at the right speed or something.
I sometimes have this trouble too. Although, I think it is getting easier. I picked it up yesterday (11 miles on it) and drove it 160 more. This morning it seemed easier to slide in there.
Although, I will agree, the last 1/2 - 1 inch of clutch travel is of upmost importance. The clutch engages VERY soon. Caught me off gaurd yesterday because the manual cars I've learned in and driven had much high engagement points (almost all the way out).

Generally, in all manual transmissions, if the vehicle is moving, the inertia of the gears causes them to keep moving, even at a stop. You shouldn't be experiencing this if the car has been parked or stopped for a while. But, if you were to come up to a stop sign, and try and jam it right into first, the gears are still moving, and the synchros can be a little out of line. Putting the shifter into second and then into first while stopped will slow the synchros to meet up for first much better. Test this when you are driving. Try and get the gear lever quickly into first while slowly moving or just stopped. I bet you get some resistance (unless you double clutch or shift slowly).
If you are stopped, shift to 2nd, and it's still hard to get into first, then either you missed the gate, or there is something wrong.
(Note: if you park your car in 1st, and need to shift to R to leave the parking spot, sometimes you have to blip the throttle to get the fork into R because some cars don't have a synchro for reverse gears).
Hope that helps.
