So! I got kind of curious and searched the forum for a specific scenario and couldn’t find it; Now I’m itching to know.

Is the Nissan altima ignition set up compatible with the 350z ECU? is there any possible way that i could take the components from a nissan altima (key slot, fob, push button start) and replace or combine it with the 350z immobilizer?

 

Welcome- the pushbutton start and Altima immobilizer can't be used with the 350Z. The electronic systems in the ECM systems are not compatible. These systems are quite sophisticated and not something for a DIYer to attempt. Hope that satisfied your curiosity itch.

are you (or anyone else) familiar with where the transponder chip is located in the altima fob/key?

What if i were to implant a 350z programmed transponder into the altima fob, find a way to place a different 350z immobilizer internals into the altima fob slot, wire it up to my ECU, then find a spot to mount it in the dash and install a start/off button?

that would literally be the same system, just “dressed” differently.

Any idea how close the transponder chip has to be to the immobilizer to allow the car to start?

This^^^ Unless you have access to Nissan R&D software and advanced degrees in EE and automotive technology, I give your chances of success at ZERO. There's a reason why Z enthusiasts have not tried this mod, as Nissan engineered these keyless entry systems to work with specific models. Not sure why OP wants to hack up his still intact Z to install a salvaged Altima system, but get ready to learn about NATS, BCS and how they interact with the ECM to allow the ignition system to operate.

 

You can get an aftermarket keyless push button system but I don't see the point, I did one in my MR2 and would not try it again, too much work.
I did it on the car because the switch was in a perfect location for button the Z has no good places for it.

 

I've been looking into this as well. Search Dowontec ST800. From my research, I've heard it can be hard to install due to bad instructions.

 

I say either of you guys should do it and report back in either the DIY section or the Help section, whichever comes first.

Lol. Help it will be, stuff is not easy, hell I'm a mechanic and am pretty damn good at electrical. That is why I did it to the MR2 I had.
Most of my issues with stuff like that is you have to disable the wheel lock as there is no way that I know of to add an electronic lock, it is just simply not worth the effort.
