So my 5th gear always had a small grind from 6th to 5th. Not a big deal, I just slow shift into 5th when cruising. But now it is grinding from 4th to 5th. My issue is, I touch the bottom end of 5th gear when on the track so I can't slow shift into it.

My question is, Do I just purchase another transmission and install it or pull mine to get the syncros fixed?

Buy from a reliable seller, but my Z has been grinding 2-3rd on non-rpm matched shifts for 9 years. Hasn't broke yet with about 300whp

No. Has only seen about 20 runs on a 1/4mile. I get your point though if you are grinding it weekly

yeah, mine is more of a dual monthly track car than anything else.

I think it would cost more to rebuild your current trans unless, of course you do it yourself and have the tools. I'd hold off as long as you can but if it really bothers you, then I'd buy a new trans from Z1 for about 1,800$. I'm facing the same decision myself but its not bothering me 1,800$ worth yet .

What kind of tranny lube have you been using?

Just replaced it last year with OEM Nissan fluid. Did the tranny and rear end.

The tranny and rear diff use different lubricants. Using Nissan GL-5 75-90W fluid in the tranny will severely degrade syncros and other parts.

I didn't use the same fluid in both the tranny and diff.

Can't hurt to ty Redline MT85 in your tranny before replacing it.

I had the same issue, tried the magical different trans fluids and it did not resolve the problem. I got mine replaced with a brand new CD00A @ Dynosty. Took the opportunity to replace clutch, flywheel, master, and slave cylinders too... should be good for another 10 years.

Frank I'm in the same boat as you. I am grinding 3rd to 4th and more recently 4 to 5th. I can baby shift it into those gears with a 50/50 shot of not grinding but when I'm on track baby shifting doesn't even come into mind hauling down the straights. The Z now only goes to and from the track as well as on track time so it gets under 5k miles a year. It sees 2-3 trackdays a month in the good New England months. Its been going on for about 2 years with 4th to 5th grinds new since last year. I had redline in the tranny for 3 years and putting in new fluids does not band-aid the grind any bit. Since I'm an 03' I don't have the CD009 transmission and am going to keep going until this one completely fails.

I often check facebook marketplace for used CD009 transmissions and see them ranging from $600-900 in the New England area. A brand new one from Z1 is 1.7k which I don't think is really worth it for me. I'll buy a used one when the time comes.

Thanks for the info. Seems that we do about the same with our Z's. I'll drive mine once in a while around town but I have a lot of other rides too.

I'll keep grinding until it's gone then... And go from there. LOL

I am new here and have an 04 350z with only 50k miles on it. I have a grinding issue when shifting from 4th to 5th as well when fast shifting. With how low the miles are on my car is there anything else I can check before replacing the transmission?

Not really. It was a synco issue from the factory.

Yes- learn how to heel-toe downshift and rev match. It really does take a lot of stress off the syncros and is a delight to perform.
