Default Why so heavy?

My 2000 z28 Camaro weights about the same as the 350z "track".

Whats up with that?

I was refering to the simalarties.

Z28=small block V-8, 2+2 seating, lots of plastic, big car

350z=V-6, 2 seats, never seen one, or driven one.

According to car "rag" about a 40 lb difference.

Here are some factors involved, which I learned about from a question I posted on the miata.net forum: 1) The Z is built on the existing platform of the G35 Sedan, a car for which weight considerations were probably not as great a concern as rigidity, interior noise levels, etc. 2) Increasingly stricter safety standards (side impact, etc.) require added weight, as compared to older cars 3) The Z is a performance bargain. Reducing weight requires using more expensive lighter materials, while adding horsepower is relatively cheap. However, there were some considerable efforts to keep the car light. There's the carbon fiber driveshaft, and I think they also used all aluminum suspension componenets.

Its not as heavy as you think. My base model weighs in at 3060 lbs, instead of the 3188 originally said by nissan.......... With me in it its only 3212lbs.

The Z weighs about as much as the NSX-T or a 911. If you compare the 911 to one from 20 years ago, it has gained hundreds of pounds due to added safey features and more powerful engine, larger brakes.

I think a V8 camero (a modern one in the last 5 years) will be a good deal heavier than the 350Z.

If you want to feel better about the weight of the Z, a M3 is about 200 pounds more, and the AMG SL55 is about 1000 lbs more!!

Um, how much gas is in the tank? a full tank is like 150lbs and that's the way the weight is reported.

Curb weight for Z-28/SS from GM's website (estimated): 3433 lbs
Curb weight for 350Z Track from Nissan's website: 3225 lbs

Ironically enough, I can't seem to find the Corvette's curb weight on GM's website.

That's a little over 200 lb difference there. Let's add other vehicles to the mix for perspective:

NSX-T curb weight from Acura's website: 3208 lbs
M3 curb weight from BMW's website: 3415 lbs

Anyway, Nissan wanted to build a lightweight car. However, they also wanted to make it solid. The Corvette uses technologies such as fiberglass panels and hydro-formed frame rails to achieve a lightweight, but solid vehicle. Nissan continues to apply conventional technologies such as reinforced steel unibodies w/ lightweight aluminum components. I'm unfamiliar w/ the construction and how solid f-bodies are, so I can't comment (although I have seen the 1LE package handle phenomenally well on the roadcourse w/ the "right" driver).

Michael.

So driving the Z should feel about as agile as my camaro minus one of my large friends, thats good, because the Camaro can "feel" rather "boatish" at times.

Weight distrabution and endependant suspension should also aid in agility for the Z.

Traded camaro for Z, waiting unpatiently for delievery.

But, and I could be wrong, I believe that's without fluids, i.e. completely dry. Whereas the published weights include stuff like oil, gas, differential fluid, etc, etc.

Again, I could be totally wrong.

You think the Z is heavy?? Its no honda civic, but I cant think of any rear drive car off the top of my head that weights around 3150lbs that has as much power as the Z(and under 80K). Hell, if you dropped about 75lbs(replace spare and jack withrun flats or fix-a-flat, lighter exhaust, replace cast manifolds with tubular headers, replace molded intake tract/airbox with lightweight CAI) , that should squeeze about an extra 20 hp out of it and you would have the golden 10:1 power/weight ratio! And yes, the distribution of weight is as important as the weight itself, the Z06 weights the same and has the same wheel base, but I drove one the other day and it just feels BIG, Theres about 2 1/2 feet of car in front and behind each axle! The Z keeps its weight tucked in and low

You want to know why it's heavy?? Look at all the people on here that complain of this little rattle and that little rattle and you'll know why it's that heavy. I would gladly live with a few little rattles for a few hundred pounds less weight, but the reality is that I am in the majority or else Nissan would have built the car that way.

I think you meant minority, and yeah, if you want to lose some weight you can always gut the interior.
