Default A more interesting than normal tire question

Yes yes, another tire question. However, I done quite a bit of searching through forums and stickies and found no answer so I need to ask actual people.

I plan to purchase PS4S tires for my Z for this next year. They do not come in 255/40r18 and 275/40r18 which is what I have been running. My options are 265/40r18 front and 285/40r18 rear which will raise the car 0.3" or go 285/35r18 and 285/40r18 which will rake the car a little more.

The question here is whether anyone has run a 265/40r18 front and whether or not it will rub with fender liners in place. I have no plans to remove my fender liners but I noticed my 255/40r18 front rubbed a hole in the fender liner on my passenger side. I pinned back the drivers side so it did not happen there. I can pin back the passenger side as well but I do not know if that will be sufficient. The 285/35r18 would get me a staggered square setup which I am sure will help out on track but I also worry about it rubbing when at full lock steering. Anyone know someone running this or are running it themselves with fender liners in place?

I am at stock ride height with bilstein b6 shocks and hotchkis sways as well as a bunch of other fun arms and things to get me -2.1 camber 0.02 toe front and -1.8 camber 0.04 toe rear. I do track the car. As you can see from some of my track pictures the front tires really tucks into that wheel well which is why I worry about it rubbing the top.

Why don't I run coilovers you ask? Chicago . Why do I want such a fat sidewall and why not just go to 35 ratio? Chicago. Why would I want tor raise the car 0.3"? I'm glad you asked. We have on nearly all our side streets now these gigantic 12-18" high speed humps which I will scrape on if my car was 1mm lower. That extra clearance will be amazing for going over the humps. Yes, I do track the car but I also like to toot around town and take it out on a date nights. It is not a dedicated track weapon.

This isn't really a new question. Tire sizes have been debated for a long time, particularly in the wheel and tire section. Depending on the width of your 18" wheels, the 265 and 285 size tires may fit properly on the rim. But speaking from personal experience of running a 265 on the front of my Z33 racecar, you'll likely be burning through your fender liners at some point. Perhaps Mic will stop in and provide a more expansive answer, as he's the wheel/tire authority around here.

In my experience Michelins run a bit wider than other brands, so you may have an issue there…what brand are you currently running?

Yes, I feared I may be burning through the fender liners with them. I just have not seen anyone running that tall of a tire at stock ride or really any ride height for that matter. I was hoping mic would chime in at some point.

You ran the 40 ratio 265 without incident?

I am currently running the firestone indy 500s as I have been for the last ten years. My issue with them is I can turn them into grease ***** in under two laps now. My other issue with them is they have gone up in price so much over the years that they are within a few hundred dollars of much better tires. I got my last set of them for about $425 on a sale. A new set of them is pushing $900. For the same tire. Doesn't make sense to me.

I've run 265/40/18 up front with Federal RS-RR (which runs wider) which did in fact rubbed on the fender liners when they're fresh. After some time, they stopped rubbing once worn down, but I have switched to 275/35/18 since.

I believe it's doable but expect to hear some rubbing on 265/40. I personally like running 275/35/18 and 305/35/18 myself now. Am running Toyo Proxies R888 now.

I've run a variety of SCCA Touring classes in road racing and run everything from a 275/35-18 to a 245/40-18. When I ran some 265/40-18 BFG R1S tires, they did damage the fender liners, so you can expect the same with occasional track use.

I see, well I guess the 265/40r18 is not going to work then. What would you recommend I go with? I could choose another tire and stick with 255/275 like I have been but I really would like to run the PS4S as it seems perfectly suited for what I use the car for.

Other options are:

A 285/35r18 front which maintains the same diameter as my 255/40r18

A 255/40R18 like I have already which will rake the car slightly more but be a larger stagger it will be a 30mm narrower track up front than the 285 out back

A 275/35r18 which will significantly rake the car more but will probably be great on track

I see no need to go wider than a 275 or 285 out back since I have an OS Giken diff out back and wow did that change the whole car. I can just hammer and go.

The car does not push with that much of a stagger on track? Did you tune it for that amount of stagger? I am assuming you track having tires like those

275/35-18 front and 285/35-18 rear would be my suggestion.

my car ran 285/35-18 all around, but was a different beast. Bumpstops were taylored to the car, and had much more camber.
