Auto 350z won’t shift past 3rd gear, manual mode doesn’t work
Hey guys, this is my first post to this forum. I just picked up a 2006 350z auto with some transmission problems for cheap. It only shifts through the first 3 gears, the transmission doesn’t even try to shift into 4th or 5th. It shifts pretty roughly in D through 1/2/3 (seemingly random shifts), and shifts very late, like 4000-4500 no matter how slow I try to drive the car. After it shifts into 3rd gear, it won’t try to shift at all. Got up to 90 on the freeway at around 5500 rpm with slow acceleration and it wouldn’t shift after a 1/2 mile.
Manual mode doesn’t help either, it sometimes registers the manual mode in 1st gear, then will occasionally let me shift up to 2nd gear for a second, followed by it force downshifting back into 1st. Doesn’t even try to go up to 3rd in manual mode, completely unresponsive.
I scanned the car for codes, and got a P0717 “Turbine Revolution Sensor” code. I looked it up quickly and it looks like it’s a sensor for the valve body to determine how fast the transmission is spinning and when to shift? I’m thinking that’s my issue, but I don’t really feel like troubleshooting the transmission itself because I found a lower mileage tranny for $150 that i just want to replace it with.
Would that fix my issue to just swap a new transmission in (assuming the new transmission is fully functional)? From my understanding the TCM is inside of the transmission, so if something electrical is broken then swapping the whole unit out should solve the problem. But I could also be wrong.
If anyone knows what’s going on please let me know! thanks
TLDR: Transmission shifts weird and won’t shift past 3rd in D, manual mode is broken, Engine code P0717 for Turbine revolution sensor. Would replacing whole transmission with junkyard unit solve problem?

Any luck yet? Just lost 4th and 5th with the same code but it runs happily through 1-2-3 but won’t grab onto 4th or 5th. When I let off in automatic mode the rpm’s will drop like it shifted but as soon as I touch the gas the rpm’s go back to 3rd gear. I got the same code
