I use mobil 1 5w-30. I was told that when using this synthetic I should only be changing the oil every 6000 miles instead of the usual 3000 miles. Anyone on here have any opinion on this?

 

There aren't many on the board that'll exceed 5K between changes even with synthetic. Other automotive boards swear by 10-15K oil change intervals... I guess it's really a matter of preference and what offers you the best peace-of-mind. How hard you drive really can affect when you should perform a change though.

If you arent racing and stuff, 5 or 6K is fine on Mobil1, imo.
Just check your oil every grand or so, to be super safe.

 

BTW...do you guys "prime" your oil filter? I have always done this, but a tech at the place I get my oil changed told me this wasnt beneficial really unless you were running a turbo...any thoughts?

 

What do you mean by "prime" you oil filter? I am not too familiar with that term.

 

Putting some oil (less than a quart or so) into the filter before applying it to the engine. [I believe] most oil changes are done with the filter dry, but with the typical lubed gasket.

 

I heard that synthetic isn't good for our cars. You sould look into it, before you continue using it.

 

Sly, mobil 1 is about the best that you can put into your Z. I called Nissan before using it and they said that if you can afford it put it in, it is the best for the V6.

 

Right now, i am using Valvoline synthetic. but a friend of mine who's a mechanic @ a Honda dealerstore told me that the best oil out there now is the Mobile 1 Syn. He also mentioned that if you are usisng synthetic oils, you really dont have to change it until 5000k(only if your'e not flooring it all the time!)

 

using mobil 1 5w30 as well... change roughly around 3k... depends how much you baby your car i guess.
just gotta remember, altho the oil is synthetic, additives do wear out just the same... and that's why i change at 3k.
