Nissan wants $275 for new front brakes.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a good company to buy new brakepads from.

I dont need anything extreme just want a nice pair of pads that I can install myself. I guess some more heat soak would be nice being that I dont have the Brembos.

Any suggestions would really help.

Get Hawk Pads from Pepboys or Tirerack. It will get rid of the dust & easy to install.

Do you recommend having my old rotors machined or should I buy new ones?

Ah, the age old question, to turn, or not to turn rotors.

When I worked at Sears auto, we turned everyones rotors. But personally, unless they're warped, I don't like the idea of removing mass from the rotor. (Even if it's still inside of specs) And buying new ones for no reason doesn't make sense, so usually I just slap the pads on the old ones. (I no that technically that's probably not the best thing to do.)

Personally, I'm planning on getting some slotted rotors when I change my pads, mostly just for looks.

They'll probably last forever. They are REALLY HARD brake pads. I recently had them put on my Z (turned rotors) and I don't think they are as effective or good as the OEM. I feel the anti-lock kick in more often than the OEM pads. However, I will agree the brake dust is almost gone. IMO, I may go with a softer compound brake pad for better performance and live with the dust.

 

Was that $275 just for pads? If so, then it's just your dealer. All the dealers in my area are charging around $50 for the front pair or the rear pair (maybe slightly less for the rears).

Changing them yourself is very easy, so if the price was indeed for only the pads than you may be able to find them for less at a different dealer and make the change yourself.

Yes. All models but Track use the same size pads, front and rear.

Wouldn't the ABS kicking in more frequently mean that the pads are grabbing harder, making the automated system have to keep the wheels from skidding where the weaker gripping pads would still allow for the tires to be rotating because they were grabbing a bit less?

Just curious.

 

I had the exact train of thought as you as I read through the ABS issue. If the ABS kicks in more often, the brake pads are grabbing BETTER than before.
