S2k a chick car... Riiiiiight.

This site is for car enthusiast, only someone who is not really a car enthusiast would bash on either the Z or the s2k. A real enthusiast is open to anything that is sports oriantated in one way or another. You don't have to like the car, but you should give them credit where credit is due.

Like I think I said waaaaay back in this thread, I think it should be closed because all it does is put a bad name on Z owners over at s2ki and like forums, and s2k owners bad names over here.

On a side note I absolutly love the s2k and love the driving experiance more then any other car I have ever drivin ( I have drivin MANY ). Only thing I do not really like is the lack of being able to tune them for higher horsepower, even with boost you do not get much for your money. Yes I know the Z is not the best to tune in NA form either.

lots of good points here...if you want to drag or get tons of power, S2000 is definitely the wrong car for you....probably want to look to an Evo for that

and i love your wheel/tire combo
good stuff

I posted this on the other board..former S2k owner myself from way back when!
Is this a daily car for you?

I had an S2000 back in 2000-2001. From a pure enjoyment standpoint, it was absolutely my most favorite car out of anything I've owned. However, it's not a terrific car for daily use IMHO.

What some perceive as it's shortcomings, I was able to appreciate as a character trait - ie the minimalist interior. S2k is all business inside. Everything is place perfectly to be within reach of the driver and there is absolutely no superfluous gagedtry to distract from the drivers experience. Not sure about the new ones, but previous models did not even have a clock (Honda did not want you to keep track of the time was what I heard at the Auto Salon (went 2 weeks after getting my S2k) - they wanted to you to "enjoy the experience". As for engine performance, it all depends what you like. When I started shopping for a fun weekend machine back then, I actually had started looking into a motorcycle (had my eye on a sweet Ducatti 996 that I even left a deposit on). After considerable thought, I decided the bike ws simply too dangerous, so I began the search for a convertible weekend sports car. The S2k engine is torqueless at low revs - I honestly did not care when I drove it. It is an absolute BLAST of a car to drive, period. it begs to be driven hard. The Z is more of a tire scorcher in terms of down low performance, but the S2k is more of a "pure" sports car experience. It's chassis is also absolutely amazing in terms of rigidity considering it has no roof - was far stiffer than the 2.5 RS I also had at the time.

The S2k is definitely the more "pure" sports car -the Z is built and desined in a more GT manner, though it does not have back seats as GT cars seem to.

In terms of reliability, the Z is the best car I have ever owned - I have not had a single issue that required me to go to the dealer for service. I had a slight issue with my S2k as the drivers window stopped working one day - made an appointment, they fixed it in 15 minutes under warranty.

When I got my S2k, I knew I wanted a convertible. That was the driving force behind me looking into the cars I did (Boxster, Boxster S, S2k, Miata). For me the S2k was a weekend car, which is a big consideration. At the time, the Boxster would have been my choice had I needed a daily driver - it was quick enough, great looking, and a nice interior. The Boxster S was what I really fell in love with - handled great, very strong motor and brakes, but once loaded up the price was nearly $60k. I then drove the honda, and I was all grins. Was everybit as enjoyable as the Porsche, at a little more than half the price. The S2k also oozes character...the Boxster by comparison could almost be considered bland (as great of a car as it was).

Tranny wise, the S is simply the best manual transmission I have ever driven - and short of a murcielago, I've basically driven everything out there from low to high end. However, I also enjoy the Z's tranny as well - it has a terrific weighted feel to it and I have never had a problem up or downshifting at speed.

As for the Z, it really is a fantastic machine. The issues reported with the early mid 03's (tranny, tires) are effectively gone with the 04. If this is to be an everyday car, the Z is hands down the car to get IMHO.

As for looks, both have a classis Japanese look to them, and both are attention getting cars. There are some sick looking S2k's out there - check out s2ki.com for suggestions. In terms of weight savings....good luck on the Z...it is not an easy car to reduce weight on at all without seriously compromising it's daily comfort level

FWIW - in my time owning the S2k, going to meets, and being an all around enthusiast, I never saw a female owner of an S2k.
Looks like a Miata? Sure if you ask my mother! Who care what someone else thinks it is...the car is what it is Miata a chick car? Maybe, but there are some bad *** Miata's out there; VW Beetle, as was mentioned, there is a chick car

4 cylinder sports car is a joke? Tell that to the Elise owners, and good look keeping up

As for it being "dinky" (adjective?) and weak, I rolled my S2k with the top down while swerving to miss two girls who ran across the street out in the Hamptons - drove up on some dude's tree bed and the car flipped. Top down, car rolled 2x and I'm still here typing. I will never forget what the first office at the scene said to me when she found me sitting on the side of the street, covered in blood, my car upside down in the street: "wow - strong car, I honestly don't know how you are alove, but thank god".

After all was said and done, I managed to scuff, dent or tear every panel on the car in tha accident - and zero frame damage. If that's not a strong car, nevermind that it's a convertible, I don't know what it

why kill this thread...for the most part it's been informative going over the pros and cons of the 350Z and the S2000. i think most people on this thread agree that they are both great cars, and we are lucky that Nissan and Honda decided to build these instead of more SUV's
though Nissan has built a LOT of SUV's recently

I have to say, as an S2000 fanatic, I think you guys are great. This thread has been a really good read. I definitely don't think it should be closed due to flaming, becaues the minor amount of flaming that's being done is pretty apparently ignorant and easily ignored.

To those of you who've owned both and say the S2000 is not a good daily driver, have you driven it with a hard top attached? Does it make any difference? My plan would include the HT for weekdays and I'd pop it off on the weekends. However, I have a 35 mile (each direction) commute five days a week. Would the `04 S2000 with increased ride-ease beat me to death, making the 350Z Roadster a better option even with no hard top?

Chick car? Not really. I'd call them both uni-sex. In central Arkansas I've seen plenty of guys and girls driving both. Young and old. Actually there's this girl in Little Rock that regularly see driving a red S2000 - gawd she's super hot driving that thing. But I definitely see more guys driving the S and the Z than girls.

I'm not reading everything, sorry. Just posting my two cents.

I chose the Z over the S2k for a few reasons. One, I think the Z looks fantastic. I like the body style much more than the Honda. It's more modern and on the edge. Two, I did not want a convertible. So that gets rid of a big plus of the S2k. Three, one of my best friends has an S2k and I love it, but I wanted a car with more oomph. The S2k is a blast to drive. I love taking Eddie's car for a spin, as does he enjoy taking mine out.

Finally I figured that the Z will have a bigger modification potential with a 3.5 liter and a newer engine. After my moderate modding of my BMW, I wanted to buy a car that I could just go ***** out with. It will probably be my only tuner car. I felt the Z offered more to go "crazy" with as a beastly street car.

A lot of good points made in this post. If you really don't want a drop top, then it's hard to beat the 350Z for the money . But if you want a drop top, then I'd take the S2000 over the 350Z convertible. And yes, the S2000's power mod potential is very limited....you really need to go forced induction if you want any gains more than +20 whp.

I agree, the weight and the looks of the ZR are definitely drawbacks. The roofline of the coupe definitely defines the shape of the entire car.

Ideally, I'd like to have a 350Z coupe (I do) and a S2000. I guess I'm being a bit greedy but, who knows, maybe I can talk the wife into buying one.

I ahve two friends with s2k so I get to drive them every now and again.

I have owned both and now currently drive the S2000, I must say the S isn't so bad as a daily driver. I use it as my daily. However at times it does become a hassle when you have to lug big things but you would have the same problems with the Z as well. The one thing that does mattter is your location on where you live. I would not want this car in the winter time if I lived up north, howver I live in Fl so top down fun year round As far as driving experience I liked both cars for what they offer, but do prefer the preciseness and race car feeling of the S2000 better than the Z. Most people don't truely get to experience it with a quick testdrive, but take it up to the mountains for the weekend with a group of enthusiests and then come back to me and tell me that is by far one of the best experiences in yout life.
Ok maybe not the best but damn very close to it.
