Orange Peel: Silverstone
Well, I just dropped my car off at Gwinnett Nissan and Nissan has sent a Rep from the paint company onsite. I will let you know tonight on what they decide to do. My take is they will probably wet sand. the car. If any part of the car has to be repainted, then they can take it back and give me another one. We will see. They have taken care of me every step of the way. When I Parked to close to the curve and broke the front spoiler, they replaced it for free sinced it was the next day after I bought it. Sit back....more to follow.

Nissan Answers:)
I picked up my car tonight and the Paint Rep that Nissan was there with saidthey are aware of orange peel problem and that it has been resolved. I guess the first 1000 were guinea pigs. Well they will get the car for about a week starting on Oct 30. They are sending out to get wet sanded and then re clearcoated after. They said after the wet sanding the paint will look more glossy then most cars from the factory. Nissan is also paying for the loaner car untill the issue is resolved. While they have it Im going to have the orange leather installed in my Silverstone. Not a bad price $650.00 cost. Let you all know how the entire process turns out.

Wouldn't wet sand the car if you plan on keeping it for more than 5 years. Sanding removes the top .3 mils claer coat, this is the densest part, and there fore provides the paint its own UV protection and such. Your car (IF they do it right, andats a HUGE if as its a dealer) it will look good...but, its durability will be severely comprimised.

I thought he said that they were redoing the clear coat too. good to hear that Nissan is addressing the problem. Also glad that they don't plan on making a whole bunch more cars with crappy paint jobs.

Decisions on Orange Peel Fix
It's not a good day today. Nissan of North America called and said they will not do the wet sanding but they want to sand the car down and repaint it. To compensate for the troubles they are offering 84month/100,000 mile warranty, Leather Seats and other accesories. If the car comes back look horrible then they will do a Nissan buy back plan. They still have not said anything about replacing the car for a new Z. I don't know what I should do? Let them repaint the car or demand a new car? I am going to speak with the owner of the Dealership tomorrow. Let you all know what happens.
Thanks

Well certainly try for a new car as a replacement! If that fails, then let them do the work and if your not happy, the GA Lemon Law will protect you. Read up on it.
BTW, who is the owner? I was under the impression it's a huge corporate network of dealers.

First of all don't get angry with me. I went to Gwinett Nissan and they called the rep Immediatly to come out a few days after. I then called Nissan the same day and got the call back today on what they could do. Maybe your dealership is not pushing them hard enough. This is why I like Gwinett Nissan, they jumped on the problem right away. Also for your information, when I spoke with Nissan they said this was the first time they heard about the orange peel problem and the rep said this was the first car that would need to be repainted. Call me lucky I guess. Also the reason I don't want a repainted car is that will devalue the vehicle. This car is not my normal daily driving car. It's a weekend car only and I don't expect to put a lot of miles on it.

if they are going to repaint your car you should make sure that the remove all moldings, door handles, bumpers etc. if the dont and just paint to the edge of these items the paint/clearcoat will start to peel down the road. also watch for paint line edges in the door openings, hood and trunk areas too. personally, i would not want it back if it was repainted. you cannot match factory paint for durability. by the way, ive been in the auto body business for 17 years.

I agree..... Unless they strip that car down and take it to a class act painter, which charges $4000 or more you will have overspray in the wheel wells and underbody, dust in the paint (not always but possible) and the VALUE OF YOUR CAR has decreased DRAMATICALLY.
That is the worst part.................. GO NEW....

Lets say i sell the car in 5 yrs. Why is the value going to be any different, especially if it looks BETTER than before? Makes no sence, wouldnt someone like it more if it looks better......

Some will some won't.
Some people may think it was in a bad accident even though you will have documentation of the paint. Looking at it from a car collector's stand point. Original is better

Decision Made.
Nissan says they want to repaint the car.I was just at the Dealership this morning and the General Manager said he would not get it repainted because it would lose it's value. I have decided to do a Nissan Buyback option. They put the paperwork in and will order another Silverstone Z for me. It may take up untill the end of the year or even into January but they will continue to let me drive my current Z untill then.
