Default Recommended Octane level

What's recommended fuel octane level for the Z? I know in California most gas stations have 91 as premium.

In Z's manual sectioc 9-3 it says

"Use unleaded premium gasoline with an octane rating of at least 91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (Research octane number 96)."

What does it mean? some told me recommended octane level for Z is 93. I wish there's higher octane level gas stations in Cali... just like Texas.

I basically only buy the premium gasoline, whatever the octane. In Washington State that usually means 92.

Basically 89/91 would be good. If you use 87 the engine might get corroded over time.

Im TAIWAN premium is 115 and regular is an AKI index of 90

Octane of 115? Some countries only advertise with RON (research octane number) or MON (motor octane number) on their gasoline. Here we use (RON+MON) /2 = octane number.

Taiwan at 22million people, 11million motorcycles, 5.2 million cars are cramped up in a size not bigger than the State of Minnesota.

here is the current prices and national standard.

Oil Product Item Current Price (NT$/liter) Adjusted Price (NT$/liter) Price Increase (NT$/liter)
Premium gasoline 17.6(US$0.55) 18.0(US$0.56) 0.4(US$0.01)
92-octane unleaded gasoline 16.4 16.8 0.4
95-octane unleaded gasoline 17.4 17.8 0.4
98-octane unleaded gasoline 18.4 18.4 0.4
Premium diesel oil 12.7 13.0 0.3
Diesel oil 11.5 11.8 0.3
Low-sulfur (1%) fuel oil 4.311 4.484 0.173

Octane of 115 is only available in some bigger cities.

I wouldnt run 89 in the Z. especially not if you intend to drive it at all agressively. you'll get some knocking. the "normal" premium gas in jersey is 93 and thats what I usually get. every once in a while i'll give it some 94

Taiwan is a bit larger than New Jersey, not Minnesota. FYI. Minnesota is like 7X larger than Taiwan.

I lived in Taiwan for a bit, getting more and more crowded everyday but the best part is speeding tickets are nominal fines (read: $40) that don't reflect on insurance rates!

The manual recommends 91 minimum. I wouldn't use less than that if it were me. And I work for an oil major. The 115 they sell in Taiwan is likely RON115, which is still pretty damn good fuel. That prob. equates to about 103+ here in the 'states. I use 93-94 all day. They tuned the Z ecu to readily available 91 octane Californian fuel. If you get an ecu reflash, 93 becomes minimum. Otherwise, the ecu will retard timing to avoid knock, thus losing serious pony's. If you want to know more about fuel, pm me.

where did you find out the Z ecu is tuned to 91 octane? is this true of newer models or just older 2003s?

I thought the TechnoSquare guy was talking about it. My understanding is that's why the US ECU is different from the jdm and why you get a pop in HP when TC reflashes. Would assume this is true for all Z's, as the owners manual spec's 91 octane minimum no matter what year you drive. Just one man's opinion. If you want more info, check out TS website or call them...
